Nerdist Play: The Evolution of Video Game Sidekicks
By Malik Forté on August 19, 2014
When you’re not strong, they’ll be your friends that help you carry on. Yep, that’s one of the beauties of having a trusty companion by your side, and one of the many things that we find intriguing about Doctor Who. But the Doctor isn’t the only one with a reliable compadre by his side–this has been an ever evolving trend in video games since the good ol’ days of Mario Bros.
To commemorate this week’s return of the Time Lord himself, we’re going to discuss some of the best companions in video games and how buddy elements have grown in the gaming world as a whole. But before we get the party started, we’re going to take a look at one of the weirder glitches from that Hideo Kojima-produced playable teaser that’s been sending the internet into a jump-scare frenzy over the last week.
I asked folks on twitter who’s the best video game sidekick ever, and here are several of the excellent responses that didn’t make it into today’s episode:
@Malik4Play I'm gonna go with Elizabeth from Bioshock Infinite. She has the most beautiful AI ever.

@Malik4Play Garrus. Hands down

@Malik4Play Fawkes from Fallout 3

@Malik4Play Kazooie hands down, that sassy bird knows how to dish out snappy come backs.

@Malik4Play I would have to say Yoshi. Tough time deciding if he's a sidekick or a type of weapon though.
