The JV Club #82: Chemda

Take a break from sneaking out to New York dance clubs long enough to enjoy the delightful Chemda (Keith and The Girl podcast) as she and Janet explore some VERY frank talk about teenage sex, the generation gap between emigrant parents and their kids, and what to do if you get a bump in your ponytail.

  • I know this a pretty old episode but I only started listening to the podcast a few months ago so I’m not caught up yet! Anyway, I can’t believe Fiona Apple was never been mentioned until this episode! She’s my all-time fave and I’m always surprised she doesn’t get more love on the JV Club given the nature of her music.

Great podcast, great guest, just great!

  • WOW!! This one could easily have gone another hour, so fascinating! The only thing missing is, I wished we knew Chemda’s parents’ reaction to meeting Lauren. Hearing abot Janet’s charitable work makes me want to give her a big hug!

  • I’ve totally done the leaning over couches or ottoman; my bf also cracks my upper back for me by doing the press and the sliding thing Chemba talks about haha. This, of course, is done when I can’t get to the Chiropractor – which I absolutely love and have been going to for over ten years.

I’m 26 and have been with the same person for 7 years. We have decided not to get married because we feel it wouldn’t change or “validate” or relationship at this point – we are already committed. I actually never really wanted to get married – it was never something I daydreamed about. A lot of my peers are getting married now, and my boyfriend and I have gotten the inevitable questions of when we’re going to tie the knot. Luckily, my mom completely understands our pov on the subject.

  • Also, on acupuncture: unlike a lot of alternative medicine, it does have a demonstrated effect on treating pain and nausea, but you’ll get the same results whether you put the needles in the “right” places (the meridians/qi stuff from traditional Chinese medicine) or in randomly chosen points. So the marking of Chemda’s body served no real purpose, perhaps it was just a pain in the ass (or whathever the point above it was).

  • 1) I think that there’s a good chance that Chemda’s “issues” with food (whether it’s addiction or just an eating disorder) stem from that treatment growing up. I don’t think that sort of thing is innate; though you may have a tendency.

    2) I don’t think you need to worry about “offending” your porn-loving listeners, Janet! I think that you can enjoy pornography while recognizing that today, porn has a gigantic influence on developing sexuality, and it isn’t exactly a “good” thing because porn isn’t realistic at all in terms of how sex works. All it does is show you mechanics that look good on camera. (Anyone who’s interested in the issue of how porn is affecting us should check out the Sex Nerd Sandra episode with the lady from Make Love Not Porn.)

    3) Loved the talk of sort of non-binary transgenderness. I know it’s still not easy, but I love that you are so accepting, Janet, and I just love that we’re living in a time where so many people are following this.. I just.. ahh!

  • Finally! I hear Iran is totally worth a visit (friendliest people in the world, except for their government/authorities but you know, that’s true of a lot of places), but yeah, I’d be scared to go there too. I wouldn’t go without someone local.
