The Indoor Kids #159: SDCC News Wrapup with Kumail and Emily

Kumail and Emily bring you all the news you need to know about (read: all the news they care about) that came out of this year’s SDCC! Also they stop along the way to take you to an arcade in Montreal, to make Ant Man puns, and to sing the A-Team theme. So, pretty standard.

  • Yup. Would agree that Doctor Who needs more change…Moffat needs to go now, and I’ll give the Clara character maybe one half more season.  It’s super stale right now.  But no, Kumail, no sleeping! Not yet.

Also, OF COURSE I know who Mark Snow is.

  • lol I’m such a dork, but celebrimbor I’m pretty sure is pronounced with a hard “k” sound, so “kelebrimbor.” But, ultimately just pronounce it however you want, it’s fun either way!!!  Love you guys and thanks for all updates!

    • You’re right about the sound. I’ve been reading the books since I was a little kid so I do indeed have a good grasp on the relationship between Celebrimbor, Luthen and Beren, and other important figures of the Second Age. :)

  • Pac-Man Battle Royale is definitely a lot of fun. I played with a few friends and when we got up to leave, I had to pretend I didn’t just want to stay and play for another 90 minutes.

  • Haven’t been to Nerdist in some time. Still pissed of at Chris for giving us, the people who went down to the SD Civic Center to buy the Nerdist Podcast Live tickets for the first SDCC show, the shitty guest. Yes, I called CM Punk a shitty guest. When you compare his ‘nerd clout’ to the second show (the one added after the first one sold out), which featured Evangeline Lilly and Michael Rooker, I was furious for having waited in line before the box office opened, having faith in Chris and team to give us, the die-hards, a good guest. And then, the second show gets the better guests. I’m still pissed about it, have been boycotting the Nerdist, and will never go to a live podcast again unless guests are announced up front. And if you want to defend CM Punk’s cred, feel free. I won’t read the posts. Exactly zero fucks are given. You know the drill.

Anyway, sorry you guys couldn’t make it this year. Would have been nice to see you both again. I just want to point out a few things regarding topics you touched on:

    1. REGARDING GETTING INTO HALL H:

Getting into Hall H requires camping out the night before, and the line starts forming at 9:30 p.m., as soon as the hall empties from the final panel of the night. This year (and I’m assuming years going forward), they are doing a bracelet system, where they give out bracelets until 1 a.m., which is sort of a ‘guarantee’ that you’ll get into Hall H. No bracelet, no admittance. Sort of a way to get rid of line cutters. We got in line at 10:30 p.m., got our bracelets a little before 1 a.m.,and did mange to get into Hall H for the first panel. So the important thing to note here is, if you don’t get in line the night before, you will not get in Hall H for the first panel, period. It is now impossible.

    2. REGARDING “THE LAST OF US” MOVIE ANNOUNCEMENT

I was wearing my “The Last of Us” t-shirt that Sony’s booth gave out two or three years ago at SDCC, so I felt cool when the ‘surprise’ panel came out with Druckmann and Raimi. For the record, the news is getting it all wrong with Maisie Williams. She is someone of interest. They had taken a meeting to see if she’d be interested, and she was. But even they didn’t seem like she was their Ellie. Of course, Hall H went apeshit when Druckmann said that they met with her that day. But you could ask Hall H, “How would you all feel about having a bowl of HIV for breakfast?!” and if you say it with excitement, they will lose their goddamn minds. I, personally, think there are at least 5 actresses I’d put before Maisie to play Ellie. But that’s my opinion. We’ll see how it shakes out.

Oh, and for the record, I’m still convinced that Druckmann was responsible for Amy Hennig and all the other talent leaving Naughty Dog. From interviews I’ve seen, that guy is a total pretentious douche. Seeing him in person, speaking off the cuff, solidified that impression. Druckmann sucks.

    3. REGARDING THE ‘FIREFLY’ VIDEO GAME PANEL

Guys… it looks like shit. I’m sorry, I was excited, too. The exciting part was Andrea Romano (who I talked to for awhile when I saw her on the street) managed to get every single actor from the original show to lay down V.O. The other exciting part is that the guy who scored the original show wrote brand new score for the game, which they treated us to. I got goosebumps… it was so incredible. But the game itself looks completely unpolished. Also, it’s TURN BASED. Yeah, a turn-based MMO. What the hell?

There wasn’t much there from what they demo’ed. It looks sparse and empty. I know the developers have a ways to go, as they are specifically funding it themselves and not relying on crowd-funding (they made that clear). So it is likely going to suck. But us Browncoats will probably buy it anyway. Personally, I just want the soundtrack.

That’s my point of view from SDCC as it relates to your news. Hope you guys make it next year! I’ll see you then!
