  • I just got to this one, and had to come see what the comments looked like. It’s not every day you talk to someone who embodies cool, who is so cool you can hear it even when they’re not trying to be. Kevin Bacon does. As much as I love this podcast, and the chemistry between the three hosts and their guests, Hardwicks “excitable celebrity nerd” persona meeting Bacons “no bullshit” personality made for some cringe-worthy moments. HOWEVER, (and I don’t feel like I should have to point this out, but being the internet here) I do not mean to say Chris sucks nor that Nerdist sucks nor that it should all end tomorrow in a flaming heap. I even have a new respect for Bacon as a down-to-earth human being, thanks to this podcast. So thanks, Chris. If even your misses are still hits, you’ve… got… a pretty good swing… Shit sports analogies.

  • @Taryn – Hi! I started typing my post before I saw your response to Doc, so I hope I didn’t sound like I was being harsh with ya.

@JetpackBlues and Three Toes of Fury – You guys are funny! And part of the reason I dig these threads so much. :HUGS:

  • a 3ToF Poem………………..

There once was a commenter named Dorn
Who’s prose took the tone of critical scorn
    We nerdist united
    For our podcast we fighted
And we were as victorious as when Kirk fought the Gorn.

    Peace .n. Poetic Justice

    3ToF.

PS: Nerdist commenters RULE….its like bonus funniness with every podcast.

PSS: Chris….i had a literal spit take when you referenced Pee Wee’s “is this something you can share with the rest of us Amazing Larry??” last week. one of my fav movie scenes. dig it!

  • Well I certainly hope no one tries to speak for me because they don’t know my language.

@ Patty: I had to listen well, because it sounded like a bong hit to me. :-P

@Taryn: What you describe works very well in the fields at the bottom of every page labelled “It’s a question! It’s a comment!
It’s a Quemment!” A constructive suggestion box that bypasses the comment threads.

  • @Pedak and Taryn – For what it’s worth, I really thought about what you both said.

And for what it’s worth, I still think what Dorn wrote was unnecessarily rude and addressing it was completely fair. First of all, what he posted felt like some random stranger coming up to someone at a party, saying “Your tie sucks,” and just wandering off. It’s not just the dismissive comment, but that the person had to make a POINT of coming over and saying it. If I don’t like something, I just move on to the next bit of free content on the internet. Second – and be honest – what more could Chris or Jonah or anyone else have done with the interview, especially when the interview subject sounded like he really needed a nap? I heard pouring and repeated gulping noises throughout the podcast, so I’m left with the image of an exhausted Kevin Bacon drinking coffee during the conversation. That’s why I put the question, “So how’s your interviewing technique” to Dorn because, seriously, what more could be done? What was missing?

As for how some of us responded to Dorn, you have to understand we’ve had some serious trolling problems in these comment threads before, so bad that one guy created the “Complaint Unit for Nerdist Trollery,” or “The CUNT Office.” I’m not kidding. Just to show you two examples, there was one guy who trolled almost every thread from almost every conceivable angle (haven’t seen him in a while, thankfully) and another who felt it necessary to make snarky comments regarding Chris Hardwick’s current AND former girlfriends. Going after a person’s loved-ones in order to poke the real target is pretty low, so when one hair on a troll’s head shows itself, someone is bound to pounce. I don’t see us as going overboard with Dorn since we pretty much said our bit and moved on to chatting with each other. I can’t speak for all the regulars here, but I really just want everyone to play nice – not agree with Team Nerdist or whoever is being interviewed 100% of the time, but for fark’s sake just play nice.

    • @Patty Marvel I’m with ya, I get it. I l love these podcasts and I’m glad it has people defending it. Like I said originally I do think there’s a place for comments that could be seen as negative without being trolling. This wasn’t one of them, never thought it was. Like I said to Doc my main point was just that there are so many truly disgusting trolls everywhere that this comment hardly seemed worth the time and simply by comparison made the response seem a bit of over kill. I totally am disgusted with the kind of stuff you’re describing, by all means lets form a protective barrior of nerd awesomness between Chris and company and those…whatever you call people who use their free time to do that.
ANYWAY…I love Nerdist. I love this podcast. Let’s go back to talking about that k?

  • @Pedak
First, answer me this. What’s so special about Dorn and Dorn’s comment that they merit special protection or exemption? As far as I can see, Dorn said something negative about the podcast and then we said negative about Dorn’s comment. Dorn expressed his/her opinion and we expressed ours. Why is our opinion automatically wrong just because we disagree with someone who has a negative opinion? In my view all of our opinions should be treated equally.

Second, if you’re going to bring nothing but negativity to the table, why act surprised when that’s exactly what you receive in return? Perhaps thou shouldst not dish it if thou canst take it.

    @Taryn
Personally, I see a leaving a random, unexplained dig about something nice somebody tried to put out into the world as more bullying than speaking out against it. And you have yet to see the full power of the nerd collective. ;)

    • @Doctor Quemmento Haha, I’m a member of the nerd collective and I still fear us when provoked.

Yeah, totally agree that there is nothing particularly defendable about the original comment that started this discussion. I was wishing internet posters acted as though they understood the concept of constructive criticism. I just meant that there are so many grotesque trolls crawling out of the woodwork constantly it makes more sense to me to save our collective rage for the really ridiculous ones and let light trolling like this pass.

Either way, I really enjoyed this episode! I always love when someone unexpectedly joins in. You don’t ever have a random person wandering across the set of a talk show but on a podcast you never know. I thought Kevin Bacon seemed like a really cool guy.

  • I see your point @Pedak. It’s not like @Dorn went full on troll and do we nerds and nerd adjacent type people really need to be hopping on the bully train? Nah, let’s not.

It would be nice if people who didn’t like something would post constructive criticism that might give Chris and crew helpful feedback rather than just “this sucks” “that was a waste” or whatever.

But as long as they aren’t firmly in the troll category we probably shouldn’t unleash the power of the protectvie nerd collective on them.

Unless it’s really, really funny cause that makes everything ok.

  • Keep your personal opinion to yourself, Dorn.

I think I speak for everyone when I say that only endless praise about everything all the time should be allowed on these comment threads. And when the praise isn’t there, we should gang up on that one dissenting voice and ridicule them so they feel bad for being different.

  • Well I’m glad we’ve got A Few Good Men (and women) here to counteract some the Wild Things that the trolls like to post, but I still think @Dorn should Apollo(13)gize for being a douche.

(By the way if you’re feeling a strong desire to kick me in the Baltos for this admittedly awful post I don’t blame you at all.)

  • Guys, guys… how can you possibly take someone seriously when they have rabbit ears, tentacles, fake eyelashes and a pussymouth?

    *looks at own Avatar*

    Wait….

  • @curtis: don’t worry! @dorn is most likely one of those folks who will only ever criticize others to make up for the fact that he will never create anything that anyone will ever talk about.

    Awwwwwwww shit!

  • Before Big C swoops in – Shut up, Dorn.

I really enjoyed this episode. He’s a genuinely interesting dude who tells great stories, not to mention that I love almost all of his movies (except Footloose, just can’t do that one).

  • just thought of a fun nerd riff….

    “273.15 degree’s of Kelvin Bacon*”

Thank you! Thank you! Try the veal!

Peace .n. The Bible Said “they danced!!”.

    3 Toes Cuttin Footloose.

    (*Kelvin = degrees C + 273.15)
