Nerdist Podcast: Henry Rollins

Musician, writer, spoken word artist, activist and all around AMAZING guy, Henry Rollins is on the show! He sits down with Chris, Jonah, and Nerdtern Kyle Clark to talk about being a workaholic, the music industry, and how Kyle and his family are such big Henry Rollins fans, they affectionately called him “Uncle Henry!”

  • I have been to 5 of his speaking shows and he routinely talks on stage for about 2.5 hours. They are an endurance challenge because he doesn’t stop talking the whole time! Amazing and interesting guy.

  • I’ve always been into punk ever since I first saw REPO MAN, but I never got on board with Black Flag or Rollins Band, but I’ve always loved an interview with Henry Rollins in some obscure PBS special on the history of rock & roll or Punk Attitude. And to hear him on The Nerdist for more than 90 minutes was a trifecta nerdgasm. Sometimes, when a guest comes on like John Lithgow or Willem DaFoe and you say you’re at the end of their hour, I understand why you don’t, but I just wish they could just keep talking. But thanks for this totally epic interview.

  • I know little about Henry Rollins and to be honest, kinda intimidated. But awesome to listen to this guy. I really liked his little videos on BigThink. MOST of the music stuff just went over my head, then again not my cuppa. He really does sound like the cool Uncle. Thanks Nerdcast and co.

  • Chris, thank you so much for letting this run longer than the usual hour.
    I loved every minute.
Not to put down previous episodes (because there hasn’t been a stinker so far) but this episode, oh man, I’d pay for quality episodes like this. Can’t believe these podcasts are free for us fans.
    Thank you so much!

  • Mowing the lawn while deep into the previous podcast and put two and two together and immediately thought Rollins would be a fucking AWESOME guest, nooo perhaps these two worlds arent capable of colliding only to hear “we just had Rollins on the next show” …DUDE we are sooo in sync! He’s coming to town in Oct and I cant go…THANKS for this, it will suffice as a welcomed substitute!

  • @chris I want to thank you for this particular episode. I started listening to the podcast today and wondered what Henry’s tour looked like if he was on one. Well it turned out he had a show in my hometown tonight. Before I went there I went to a record store in front on the venue and who should be there but Henry Rollins himself. He happens to be a hero of mine so I politely asked for a picture and let him know his work means a lot to me. The. I went to his show and it was revelatory. Thank you Chris for helping one of my dreams come true.

  • Sweet and sour tap-dancing Cthulu on a pogo stick CRACKER!

I’ve been looking forward to the Henry Rollins podcast for DAYS and the man did NOT disappoint! I’ve never had the pleasure of seeing him live, but I’ve watched every spoken word special and every episode of “The Henry Rollins Show” Netflix has in their library. And I’ve played some Black Flag on my radio show. Mr. Rollins, I’m happy to hear you’re a Dinosaur Jr fan, so please feel free to tweet some requests my way. Actually, that goes for anyone reading this.

    Some other thoughts –

Have seen the book “Rip it Up and Start Again” mentioned somewhere and remembered it only because it’s an Orange Juice single’s title, but if HR gives it a thumbs up, I’m ordering a copy.

Good idea having Kyle on as a pinch hitter for Matt. Actually, that’s a good policy to keep not just when a regular Team Nerdist member is MIA, but when you know someone with a ton of knowledge of and fandom for whoever the interview subject is – they’ll know what questions need to be asked and having an uber-fan in the room might make the interviewee feel pretty darned good. Sorta how Mike Phirman should tag along should you ever interview Tom Lehrer (HINT! HINT!).

Now if you’ll excuse me, I have a few books to order from the library per this podcast…

  • @Bryan – was it Sleep
I was also at FYF a few years ago and saw that Sleep show that Kyle said his filling hurt from, and I will second that it was fucking awesome

  • I was at FYF, and while I was enjoying Dinosaur Jrs. set I saw Henry in his spot banging his head and rocking out, and it was the most beautiful thing I have ever seen.

  • The comment thread above is one of the things i LOVE about nerdist. Even with a heated exchange, folks are talking back and forth and kinda/sorta workin it out rather than just escalating the anger and shit throwing. We nerdist fans are a classy bunch o fu@kers!

Peace n Desperately trying to be a skateboard punk in the 80’s but coming to terms with the fact that its a nerdist life for me….and thats a good thing.

    3ToF in the mosh pit.

  • I didn’t find this episode that interesting, but you never know who’s going to be next, and there’s no reason to believe I won’t like them (there wasn’t any reason to believe I wouldn’t like this one, going in, but it was just one of those that didn’t appeal to me.) Does Henry only visit places that most other people try to stay away from, or does he only mention those places?

Does the longer show length mean there was a new recording device, or that the CD was switched out smoother?

  • @Chris: I get your point. Your comment was sweet, succulent troll bait and it really rubbed me the wrong way. But did it really need to be said here? Is Manson still relevant in your world?

@Quemmento: Only person reactionary here was me. :-(

  • @Chris Johnston
I see where you’re coming from Chris, but to assume that a guy is a piece of shit and supports everything that Charles Manson stands for because he sent a few letters back and forth and produced an album for him seems like jumping the gun a little bit, don’t you think? I mean, you seem like a smart guy. You can’t think of any other reason Rollins would do something like that? Why be so quick to turn your nose up at a guy when you don’t have all the facts? Even if you don’t agree with that outlook, shitting on Nerdist because they had on one guest that you didn’t like also seems a bit reactionary to me.

And this isn’t the first time I’ve said this today, but in my experience fucking yourself can be a fun and healthy way to pass the time, so don’t be so quick to turn your nose up that either. ;)

  • @jetpack

I dont know what your getting at, and why you keep saying shitty things to me. telling me to go fuck myself and I’m a jagoff and what not. sorry I dont like people who befriend cult leaders who have people murder other people. I guess I’m the ass hole for that one right?

  • Thanks Chris
    Thanks Jonah
    Thanks Kyle
    Thanks Henry
Awesome awesome awesome. Loved the stories. loved the talk. Chris I will see you in Toronto in a couple of weeks. I will see Henry in November.
    Whhhhhoooooooooo!

  • I know what the facts are, jagoff. I’m not ignorant.

He wouldn’t fight you physically, that’s not what I was getting at. But I think you’d be at a severe disadvantage debating the topic and your opinion, if you took him to task.

The point is, coming in here to take a steaming dump on Rollins, the interview, Chris/Nerdist is your right, but not easily welcomed or tolerated.

  • @jetpackblues

Fact: he did it, so what if it wasn’t released
Fact: he was pen pals with the guy for a while
Fact: I would because I cant stand that guy. whats he going to do fight me for pointing out the truth?
Opinion: I can go fuck myself because I dont like a guy who was friends with the leader of a cult that killed someone? you go fuck yourself.

  • @Chris Johnston: a) I dare you to say that to his face b) Rollins/SST called off the project after getting death threats. Five copies exist and Hank has 2 of those pressings.

    c) Go fuck yourself.

  • My favorite episode of the podcast so far. Henry Rollins interviews should be annotated with a list of bands & books he mentions, because his enthusiasm is infectious & makes me want to check it all out (already ordered the Simon Reynolds book – UK version).

  • this guy is a POS. he produced a Charles Manson album. through all his speaking out against racist and bad republicans he has the nerve to say that after being pen pals with Charles? this guy sucks and I lost a little respect for the nerdist.

  • Wow, that was an amazing podcast and I learned so much about Henry Rollins that I never knew. He seems like such an amazing and interesting human being and I will definitely need to go to his show the next time he is in Dallas.

Also, I have to say that I have never heard of noise rock, but after the podcast I looked up Lightning Bolt and I have to say, HOLY S**T! This is so unbelievably amazing. The first song I heard was 20 and I just sat there for 20 minutes not able to do anything else. I just zoned out and listened to every nuance of the song. I must listen to more!

  • HaHaHa!
“Black Flag Bubble Machine” is going to be the name of my All Anglo J-Pop/Punk Band. Basically all we will do is Green Day covers while dressed as Sailor Moon. I can’t wait to hear this one.

  • Back in ’86, Ann Arbor Michigan, Rollins coated 16 year old me with a thick arc of long-haired head sweat during one of Black Flag’s last shows…I like to think I became a man that day. That and he got annoyed when the venue turned on the stage-side bubble machine during the show.

  • Been waiting all day for this to pop up just to say THIS EPISODE WAS AWESOME!

Always dig listening to ‘Hank’. Glad he plugged the KCRW show. The music he plays gives you a peek into how varied his taste are. Also glad he mentioned the Rollins Archive (http://rollins-archive.com/). I was going to bring it up here, but kinda thought twice about it in case it painted an unwanted target on the site.

Hope to see him live on 11/4 for the penultimate Capitalism show. Wish I could be @ 9:30 for the Election Eve show too.

The Iggy Pop story was hilarious and the last 15 minutes took me back.

“When you see the one that sees thru you,
When you see the one that laughs at you – It’s me!”

  • Ahhhh! YES! So very excited! Just saw him kill it in Hawaii. I don’t have a hour and forty minutes before school starts. I have to wait until my students leave! That is too long. Maybe 4th graders can handle this….

  • I loved every second of this podcast! I’ve loved and have looked up to Henry Rollins ever since my friend introduced me to his works, and it was like Christmas morning seeing this pop up on the iTunes download. Thank you Chris for setting this up!
