  • Hm. I was put in “special” classes with the mentally disabled kids all the way up through high school, til I was finally diagnosed with a common, treatable disorder and learned to manage it. Getting called a retard by strangers was 100% of my social life up til then. Somewhere along the line I figured out that other peoples words only offend you 1, they’re directed at you personally, and 2, you let them, by attaching enough weight to them to take them seriously. They’re really just other peoples thoughts, and you have no way of either controlling them, defending yourself from them, & most importantly, knowing where they come from. Sometimes they come from problem places worse than your own, and sometimes they come from harmless misunderstandings, or even thoughtless ramblings. Words should not be given the power to offend. Actions are another story.

  • Obviously they’re free to talk about whatever they want, and this is a free podcast, as we’re often told, but it does seem a bit dim to pick on autistic people when there are most likely quite a few in their audience. I know it’s the trend to jump all over people for getting “offended,” but offending your target demographic is just bad business, if nothing else.

  • Big fan of the podcast; I know you address this quite often by defending yourselves… but.. I was really hoping to hear from Brad, someone whose work I’m a big fan of but know nothing about. You guys drowned him out, I still know nothing about him. I bet jumping into a group of friends and having to be comfortable with their report is hard.. this is a positive internet criticism not YouTube style flaming. Still love the podcast!

havent heard this one yet so i cant comment on the comments being commented upon. (what a sentence!).

As for the talkbacks: provided they arent attacking, i think its ok for them to provide different viewpoints and opinions. Someone was geniuinely hurt by something said. Others are suggesting, albiet in their own voice, that the comments were being taken too seriously. That doesnt change the fact that someone was hurt and voiced their opinion which is a good way to approach it on this page…we all have a voice and it is heard by those that make the show.

Now…trolling comments on the other hand..aka comments made for the sake of shitting on something just to do so?…those are just useless wastes of 1’s and 0’s. and serve no purpose other than providing the poster a brief respit from their own personal issues.

    3ToF – group hug y’all!

  • Remember when this podcast had good guests? Look at the early episodes and its filled with big names. Now it’s just small timers. Must have run out of favors from his more famous and interesting friends.

  • It’s interesting to head the podcasts described as “modular friendships”. The same themes are expressed in Fight Club (moreso the book than the movie). Never thought to align those “single serving friendships” with the pod! Very interesting. Great episode, as always!

  • New favorite word : “Maronate” (v.) – To place an ad line, inadvertently or otherwise, that promotes Marc Maron’s WTF podcast into the advertising slot of another podcast, without any regards to the propriety or shame associated with such placement.

  • I usually drive five hours from Minot, North Dakota to Fargo, North Dakota for concerts. Come to ND, Matt. I’ll show you how to put some wear and tear on your car in the interest of live music.

  • To Beth *HUG* I totally understand where you are coming from. I think the reactions to your comment were a bit extreme. I think all you were asking for is understanding and a bit of empathy.

  • Ya know, I’m actually kinda disappointed that Chris comes in here after pretty much every podcast is posted and responds to people who don’t like it but hasn’t responded when some poor girl gets harassed for saying making fun of mentally handicapped people is below the intelligence and class usually shown by the hosts. Maybe he’s busy but he’s been kinda chatty on twitter today so I dunno.

  • I see where Beth is coming from. Making fun of someone who can’t laugh at themselves isn’t the same as making fun of gays or minorities or cancer patients, etc. They can understand sarcasm and irony when people with mental disabilities can’t. I’m not offended by it, but still it’s kind of cheap heat.

  • @Beth “You’re going to say what you’re going to say but just know you made me burst into tears..”

Don’t be so easily offended because something directly applied to your life, and also don’t try so hard to make the Nerdist crew feel poorly about their free content. They’re surprisingly very tame when put up against other uncensored podcasts.

  • @Beth

So basically what you are saying is you got offended because it hit close to home for you? But you didn’t get offended at ANY OF THE MILLION OTHER OFFENSIVE THINGS SAID OVER THE COURSE OF THESE PODCASTS!!!?? Seriously, I am sorry you and your brother had to deal with such cruelty but I dont think its fair for you to call Jonah out when he is a comedian. Listen to the Anthony Jeselnik podcast, they discuss issues like this about what is “off-limits” and sorry but things like cancer, race, and autism cannot be off the board unless everything is off the board. Either everything is offensive or nothing is. Jonah didn’t just walk up to you on the street and start teasing you or your brother either…. Im sorry you cried and that people were mean to you but we have all been bullied and I think you should know that laughing about things that hurt or that are sad can actually be really beneficial. Unless you just dont think its funny which is fine

  • My brother has autism and has been made fun of his whole life by kids and other adults. I usually chalk up those people to being young or ignorant but it really hurt to hear someone lik Jonah who I think is funny and smart say such horrible things about a group of people who can’t defend themselves. You’re going to say what you’re going to say but just know you made me burst into tears because I just heard another example of how cruel people can be.

  • I did a search Brad because I wasn’t familiar with him. He looks like a completely different person in every picture. It’s really eerie.

Like Jonah, being overwhelmed is my Ambien. It’s a completely ridiculous coping mechanism.

  • Love ‘Wizard People, Dear Reader’. Managed to snag it before it was pulled and watch it once a year or so. The tale of Harry Fucking Potter and his best friends Harmony and Ronnie the Bear is a true masterpiece.

  • thanks guys for gettin me thru the last hour of work. i always enjoy the show, but the last 5 minutes of each one have been my favorite because of the laughs shared and given. Tired Falcon!! YAAAAAY!!! DOGUITAR!! HOOO HOOOOO!!! BRUCE GUTTER!! FUCK YEAH!!! thanks again boys!! i like exclamation points.

  • I watched Wizard People, Dear Reader last Friday and was just thinking last night that Brad Neely would be an amazing guest to listen to. So stoked to listen to this.
