Some parents want to embarrass their children. But not all parents can reach the level of humiliation that stay at home dad Dale Price did. If a “nerdist” is someone who turns their nerdiness into art, Price fits the bill perfectly. For over six months, he waved his son off to school like many other parents. But unlike other parents, Price added a superhero/gamer flair to those special moments. From Wonder Woman to Mario, he had a different costume EVERY DAY specifically for his 30 second cameo. Remember, there are no small parts, only small actors! Price’s dedication alone makes him an awesome nerdist, and even his son is now amused by the gag. Here are some of Price’s zealous creations.

Anyhows, there’s a thread here. Post your quemments! I’ll pluck some out of the word garden and offer them to the Scottish Mr. T like a fanciful bouquet. I can’t guarantee I’ll ask all of them. In fact, I’m going to go ahead and NOT guarantee that.

Hi friends! This week, BBC Worldwide announced that a full Doctor Who video game, The Eternity Clock, will be released in early 2012, via digital download “initially on PlayStation 3, PlayStation Vita, and PC consoles,” the implication being that it would expand to other consoles. The official press release about the storyline is as follows:

Doctor Who: The Eternity Clock will immerse gamers in the universe of Doctor Who, allowing them to take on the role of the Doctor and River Song as they travel across time and space to save the Earth. Gamers must learn to master the complexities of time travel with exceptional time based game play, changes made in one time will impact another creating multiple possibilities and challenging players to solve puzzles across the centuries.

“A wholly new storyline has been developed especially for this new Doctor Who console game franchise, written in collaboration with the BBC Wales team. Photo-real graphics, television quality scenes and highly realistic characters will bring the world of Doctor Who to life immersing fans completely in the twists and turns of an action filled plot. The stars of the series Matt Smith (the Doctor) and Alex Kingston (River Song) have recorded full voiceovers for their characters in Doctor Who: The Eternity Clock and motion capture has been used to create in-game characters that are incredibly realistic providing the ultimate Doctor Who gaming experience.”

I don’t know about youse guys, but this sounds very intriguing. I’m quite excited to play it.

And in quick related news, Doctor Who‘s sixth series was just named as the top-selling series on iTunes for 2011. The full story is HERE. Well done, Whovians.

This is a picture of my grandfather with my great, great grandfather from around 1942. My grandfather, Jim Facente, was a 1st generation Italian-American who served as a Naval medic during WWII. He would later go onto a) produce my mother, b) open a bowling center and c) provide an environment in which my professional bowling father could meet said mother. He was always one of my absolute favorite people. I idolized this man whose side-obsession with technology and gadgets inspired my nerdery from a VERY young age. He was warm and kind but also strong and decisive. He taught me to push through stuff even when you’re afraid, a trait he no-doubt honed as a soldier. Sadly, we lost him in 1995 but hardly a day goes by that he doesn’t drift into my thoughts in some way or I don’t find myself striving to make myself worthy of the legacy he left behind.

Between my time at G4 and as a podcaster, I’ve received many wonderful notes from folks serving overseas in the various armed forces about how our programming connects them to their home. Those notes always mean a lot to me especially when I try to empathize with the idea of being separated from my family in a hostile environment. So for my grandfather and the men and women who have dedicated their lives to cause bigger than themselves on behalf of our country, I throw out an immense amount of gratitude and a very sincere Happy Veterans Day.

Fun fact! Veterans Day was originally Armistice Day and was declared as such by President Woodrow Wilson on November 11, 1919, or the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month marking the armistice of WWI. In 1954, the name was changed to Veterans Day to celebrate all those who had served during military conflict.

Sweet buttery beans! YouTube announced today the creation of 100 or so new channels that are the result of partnerships with some very fancy individuals. I am EXTREMELY proud to announce that The Nerdist will take its place among the fanciness. The Nerdist Channel is a foundational partnership between ourselves, The Jim Henson Company, GeekChicDaily, and Broadway Video Entertainment, with strategic partners including Soapbox Films & The Chernin Group

“But Chris,” you say, “I have 7 YouTube Channels covering everything from yarn-bombing statues to cats in suds. How is this different from any of that??!” Excellent question. Smartly, YT is going to get behind these channels to create an offering of entertainment across a variety of video genres–everything from music to sports to cooking to pop culture (e.g., NERD CULTURE!). It has been my continuing goal with Nerdist Industries to create nerd-based content that I would want to consume myself, were I not making it. Sort of a “Nerd FUBU”, if you will.

This channel will give us the opportunity to create programming that would normally be crushed by the constraints of television (um, I still love and work in you, TV!). While we will certainly be producing more traditional long-form content, TV just doesn’t have a place for pieces from :30 to 7 min. Also, if you’ve ever gone through television development you know that it is a LONG process where a lot of the original creator’s voice usually gets lost along the way. This will be a perfect platform for maintaining the integrity of the artists’ vision while being able to turn things around efficiently to preserve freshness, like hot bread for your eyes. Beyond that, I couldn’t have asked for a more wonderful group of partners to manifest this shared vision. I know it sounds corny, but we really all came together under the idea of, “Let’s just be nice to each other and make cool stuff together.”

In the coming months you will see announcements begin to trickle out of our information spouts that will provide more of the whos and whats. Keep an eye here at Nerdist or sign up for the daily newsletter at GeekChicDaily.com.

Enjoying the burrito!

Yes! The site got a refresh. Mainly, I’m sick of looking at a blog. I feel like we’ve moved beyond that. As the multi-headed mutant that is Nerdist Industries has continued to grow over the last few years, it seemed appropriate to give it more of a digital magazine feel. We have many wonderful contributors and podcasters now, and I wanted to represent them all fairly.

In the coming weeks and months there will be many exciting announcements from NI so I wanted an online home that I didn’t wag my finger at everyday while going, “Why aren’t you SNAZZIER?!” If change is like poison to you, then feel free to click “FULL VIEW” in the top right corner of the page to return to blog-land. Otherwise, explore the new podcast page with our full menu of shows! Play the most recent Nerdist podcast at the top of the page! See live performance dates in list and calendar view!

There may be little glitches here and there (everything is new!), so you can let us know at the bottom of the page if something isn’t working right. I really want your experience on the site to be informative, fluid and purty to look at. Thanks for sticking with us as spread our nerd wings a little further!

We’re supposed to have something pithy and perceptive to say about Steve Jobs’ resignation right now, I suppose. I mean, we’re Nerdist and we’re as much into tech as anything else (okay, maybe we’re more into Doctor Who. And the Muppets. And space, and standup comedy, and zombies. But tech’s up there, too). Pretty much the only thought coming to mind, though, is, well, there it is, um, he’s stepping down, hope he’s okay. I’ve been looking all over the Net and Twitter, and nobody else appears so far to have anything special to say, either (and, no, “iQuit” is not an original joke). It’s all just general shock, even though a) he’s not dead, b) he’ll still be Chairman, for whatever that might be worth, and c) everybody knew this was coming at some point. It wasn’t a secret that at some point, he’d be unable to continue. And now that the day is here, the news still came as something of a shock. What? Now? Really? That must mean… oh.

Our contribution here? Just to remind you of a few things:

1. This is not the end of the world. Your MacBook Pro will not dematerialize. Lion will still be confounding your scrolling instincts tomorrow. Your AT&T iPhone will still be dropping calls. There are about two years’ worth of new products already in the pipeline. Whatever changes the company goes through, if any, won’t be apparent for a couple of years, if there are any changes. It might even get better. Nobody knows.

2. There is absolutely no proof at this time that Matt Mira’s resignation from the Apple store at the Grove is related to today’s announcement. You can make assumptions, but until there’s proof, it remains in the “Unsolved” file.

But maybe you have something more pertinent to say. Can Apple survive and innovate without Jobs at the day-to-day helm? Is Tim Cook the right guy? Will they become “just another company”? Perhaps you’re not an Apple fan at all, you have an Android phone and use Linux anyway, and you have a perspective on this. Or you just don’t care. Whatever your thoughts, post ‘em below in the comments. Good, bad, indifferent, your choice; Just keep it civil.

This is especially true for the second child of Li Lin and Li Juan. Like many 21 year-olds, they would rather play video games than be parents. Unfortunately, they didn’t always have the money to play. Children can be a total drain on resources, and Li Lin and Li Juan have three of them. So they figured it was time to lighten their load.

That’s when the middle child bit the dust. No they didn’t kill the kid (they’re not animals!), but they did sell child #2 for $500. You would think $500 goes a long way in China, but the Internet Café is a cruel mistress. They ended up selling their other two kids as well, but this time for around $4600. Now, that should buy you tons of WoW hours. But as karma would have it, Li Lin and Li Juan won’t be able to spend their earnings, since they will most likely be spending forever behind bars.

Let this be a cautionary tale, gamers. Don’t sell your kids for ANYTHING.

Not even for that Duke Nukem game.

AM I RIGHT?!

The story of the fake Apple Stores in China that has been all over the news has become a bit more interesting. The Wall Street Journal did what they do best: spit in their palms, slap ‘em together and do some journalism. After multiple calls, a sales employee answered the phone and spilled some beans. “What kind of beans were spilled?” is a question left unanswered. I’m not sure what beans are popular in that part of the world. My only worry is they were black beans. If it was out of a can, that juice can leave one darned stain.

The employee did reveal they are fully aware of the inauthenticity of the store. That’s a bit disappointing, considering a duping of that nature instantly became one of the funniest things in the world to me. Another disappointing element to the comedic nature of the story, although an overall great thing for the people buying their stuff, is the products are real. All the various iThings they sell are legit and even priced at Apple’s set prices. Where the products come from, exactly, no one has said. Most likely, they are from resellers. There is also a great chance some are stolen. From firsthand experience, I can tell you that plenty of people try to steal large ticket items to send to a different country for profit. It is usually someone attempting to use a fake credit card. It happens fairly often at my store, so I’m positive it happens all over the place. Also, every so often, there are stories of hijacked shipments in the news.

There is no doubt the Kunming stores are on Apple’s radar. I’m sure we will get another chapter in this story soon. Apple don’t play that shit. They hit back.
