Tribute to Hayao Miyazaki Done in 8-Bit is Adorably Pixelated

Hayao Miyazaki is one of the best and most innovative filmmakers of the last 50 years. He happens to make his art using the medium of animation, but his amazing sense of wonder and adventure would likely come through in any capacity. As a big fan of Miyazaki (if you aren’t reading my weekly look at each of his films, entitled Miyazaki Masterclass, you might want to!), it’s always nice to see his characters and worlds pop up here and there on the internet. One such web-find occurred this week in the form of a 45 second tribute to all 11 of the great master’s films, done in the prettiest version of 8-bit I’ve ever seen. Have a look!

Hayao Miyazaki Tribute in 8-bit from whoispablo on Vimeo.

The tribute was done by Vimeo user Who Is Pablo who deftly weaves iconic images and characters from all of Miyazaki’s great works. Starting with perhaps his best known work My Neighbor Totoro, he transitions into Princess Mononoke before exploding into all of the films at once. There’s even some Ponyo in there, doing her running on whales thing. This is a video that pays to pause through after you’ve watched it once. It’s only 45 seconds; not much of a commitment for even two views.

This already makes me nostalgic for his genius and his retirement was only announced fairly recently. Never too soon for another rewatch, eh?

Which of Miyazaki’s movies is your favorite? Which one would you most likely put on if you were sick to make you feel better? Let us know in the comments below.
