Music Geek Track Of The Day: ‘Candler’ by Childish Gambino
By Becca Gleason on August 26, 2014
Well, it was bound to go one of two ways, Donald Glover a.k.a. Childish Gambino could have announced his resurrection on Community Season 6, or he could take his rapping to the next level. After the release of his new track “Candler”, it looks like he took the latter route. It’s darker, less playful and more intense than any work he’s done to date. That’s not to say CG has lost his sense of humor completely; around halfway thorough the song, he starts shamelessly scatting. Boy, do I love me some good scatting. The more scatting the better, I always say. Zero sarcasm intended. Seriously, I’m not being ironic, I actually really love scatting. (Editor’s Note: Phrasing…)
The thing we should all take away from the evolution of Gambino is that though he might be rapping about subjects less “nerdy” than what we’re used to, his devotion to his music career has only become more serious, and his recent music is Fionly a direct outcome of that. He’s the only person that can rap about a “Tiny pink umbrella” in his drink and still sound like a badass. Though I must admit, I would love it if 50 Cent came out with a song called “Tiny Pink Umbrella,” the world would most definitely be a better place.
