Marvel’s DAREDEVIL Casts Deborah Ann Woll as Karen Page

The fine folks at Entertainment Weekly are reporting an exciting new addition to the growing cast of Marvel’s Daredevil series on Netflix. According to EW, True Blood alumni Deborah Ann Woll will play Matt Murdock’s long-running love interest (and future heroin-addicted porn star) Karen Page. She joins Charlie Cox (Boardwalk Empire) as Murdock/Daredevil, along with Elden Henson (The Hunger Games: Mockingjay) as Foggy Nelson, Vincent D’Onofrio (Men in Black) as crime lord Wilson ‘Kingpin’ Fisk, and Rosario Dawson (Sin City), who has a secretive role on the show.
Karen Page was first introduced in the pages of Daredevil in April of 1964. Stan Lee and artist Bill Everett created the character, originally hired as a secretary for Matt and Foggy’s law office. For a while both Matt and Foggy had feeling for Karen, leading to tension between the two friends, until Karen declared she was in love with Daredevil. Once it was revealed that Murdock and Daredevil are one in the same, Karen and Matt quickly fell in love and a whirlwind romance began. Like many of the women in Matt Murdock’s life, Page was eventually driven away by a fear for Murdock’s safety and his reluctance to give up his double-life as a crimefighter.
The intervening years are not kind of Karen, who moves from New York to Los Angeles, becomes a soap opera star and quickly develops a heroin habit. Her addiction ruins her career as a mainstream actress and she starts a career as a porn star. While down on her luck and in need of a fix she sells Daredevil’s secret identity to a drug deals, who forwards the information to Kingpin. Eventually, Matt and Karen are drawn to each other again and he helps her find sobriety. Sadly, the character’s suffering doesn’t end there, as years later it is revealed she’s HIV positive. Shortly after that revelation the character is brutally murdered by Daredevil foe Bullseye. And you thought your last relationship was rough.
It’s unclear how close to the source material series showrunner Steven S. DeKnight (Spartacus) plans on sticking, although if current speculation that Dawson’s mystery character is actually Typhoid Mary (who is revealed to have an affair with Matt while he’s back together with Page) turns out to be true, than perhaps the full Karen Page arc will be told. We will find out when Daredevil premieres on Netflix next year. Marvel and Netflix had no comment on the casting at this time.
