DOCTOR WHO Series 8 Script Leak: Don’t Spoil Yourself
By Amy Ratcliffe on July 7, 2014
The internet is a dangerous place for those would like to remain spoiler free. Set pictures and plot details about our favorite shows leak all the time. Determined photographers or fans track down filming locations, or insiders feed the rumor mill. In the case of series 8 of Doctor Who, five full scripts have been leaked online. That’s pretty much half of Peter Capaldi’s first season as the 12th Doctor. We know you’re excited about seeing Capaldi leave his mark and shape the Doctor into a new person – we are too! But, don’t give into temptation and read the scripts. You don’t want to make David Tennant look like this, do you?
We understand loving a series or character so much that you feel it necessary to gather as much information as soon as possible. But remember the days before the internet and before films and television shows had 5,000 teasers and trailers? It was a joy to sit down and watch a story unfold in front of you without any idea of what was in store. Being surprised is fun, guys. I promise. Besides, reading the scripts is just a small piece of the picture. I don’t want to encounter a new alien (if there are any) for the first time in text without an image. It wouldn’t be the same. I want to be able to have this kind of reaction when I watch series 8:
The BBC is also encouraging restraint. They issued the following statement to Entertainment Weekly:
BBC Worldwide is currently investigating a security issue around Doctor Who Series 8 where unfinished material has inadvertently been made public. We deeply regret this and apologise to all the show’s fans, the BBC and the cast and crew who have worked tirelessly making the series. We would like to make a plea to anyone who might have any of this material and spoilers associated with it not to share it with a wider audience so that everyone can enjoy the show as it should be seen on 23rd August. We know only too well that Doctor Who fans are the best in the world and we thank them for their help with this and their continued loyalty.
They highlight an extremely important point: if you want to go ahead and spoil yourself, do it if you must. However, don’t be the jerk that ruins it for other fans. Read the scripts, keep the information to yourself, and don’t even share reactions.
I encourage everyone to refrain from reading the leaked Doctor Who scripts. Repeat after me: I solemnly swear upon the 12th Doctor’s kidneys, whatever color they may be, that I will not read the leaked scripts. Be surprised with us!
