The Teenage Witch is Back! SABRINA Launches in October

Archie Comics – flying high on the continued success of their hit horror series Afterlife With Archie - announced this morning that fan-favorite, teenage witch Sabrina (Spellman) will star in her own solo book for the first time since 2009. The new series, an ongoing, is called Sabrina and appears to be a much darker take on the character than previous iterations.

The dark tone is no surprise, really, as Afterlife With Archie writer Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa is also on board to bring a bit more macabre to Sabrina’s witchy proclivities. He’s joined by artist Robert Hack, who has already turned in some spectacular images for the series, as evidenced in the gallery below:

This one is sure to be a treat for fans already enjoying Afterlife With Archie, but judging by the images provided today, also holds promise for horror fans simply longing for a strong witchcraft-based story. Sabrina’s always been the Archie Comics answer to the supernatural, created in 1962 by George Gladir and Dan DeCarlo as a fun one-shot for the anthology series Archie’s Madhouse, the character immediately struck a chord with readers whose enthusiasm for the adorable, half-witch shocked even her creators. The character went on to inspire an animated series about her adventures in 1969, a full year before even appearing in her own comic series.

Traditionally Sabrina is depicted as living with her two aunts, Hilda and Zelda, along with her cat Salem (who is actually a witch under a curse as punishment for his evil ways) in Riverdale adjacent Greendale. No indication if the new series will follow this same setup or establish a completely new continuity for itself, or perhaps an amalgamation of the two as we’ve seen done in Afterlife With Archie. We’ll have answers by Halloween, Sabrina #1 is set to launch in October.
