PENNY DREADFUL Coming Back for Season 2!
By Clarke Wolfe on June 4, 2014
Showtime’s latest genre effort, the period drama Penny Dreadful starring Eva Green and Timothy Dalton, has been greenlit for season two, Variety is reporting. Showtime has ordered ten episodes for season two, up from season one’s eight.
Showtime president David Nevins expressed his enthusiasm for the series to Variety by saying, “We were trying to do something a little different for Showtime and find a show that would re-establish us with passionate genre fans in the post-Dexter era. It feels like we’re hitting on both levels with a show that has deep, rich, complicated characters and interesting psychology and the genre component. The world of the show is just getting deeper and richer. [Series creator] John Logan has incredible ideas that are just starting to be exposed. I can’t wait to see how it evolves in season two.”
Dreadful has been doing very strong numbers for Showtime in younger demographics as well as VOD and digital platforms, like Showtime Anytime, as Nevins continued, “We’re seeing more 18-34 demographic numbers with this show than we’re used to. The show is being consumed differently than other shows — a higher percentage of its viewership is on-demand and authenticated.”
For a show that combines period drama, literary figures and the supernatural, Penny Dreadful could have been a big, over-the-top mess. Instead, I’m finding that half way through season one, fans are treated to a very entertaining ride that blends the legends of “Frankenstein,” “Dracula,” Dorian Gray and other fun genre favorites (I’m calling it now — we’re going to get some “Phantom of the Opera” action sooner or later) pretty smoothly.
