Josh Trank to Direct STAR WARS Stand-Alone Film

The internet may be buzzing with leaked photos and notes from the set of Episode VII, but that doesn’t mean there’s no room for further Star Wars news. Lucasfilm and Disney have announced that Josh Trank is on board to direct one of the stand-alone Star Wars films. These are the one-shot stories being released in between the episodes of the sequel trilogy. Godzilla director Gareth Edwards is set to direct the first of the stand-alones.

Trank’s directing resume includes 2012’s Chronicle, and the upcoming The Fantastic Four reboot. That’s still in production with a 2015 release date, so Trank will probably be tied up for the near future. He had the following to say in the press release, “The magic of the Star Wars Universe defined my entire childhood. The opportunity to expand on that experience for future generations is the most incredible dream of all time.” He likes Star Wars so much, he even worked with Studio 8 to make a colorful fan film back in 2007 (contains NSFW language):

Kathleen Kennedy had plenty of compliments for the director, “He is such an incredible talent and has a great imagination and sense of innovation. That makes him perfectly suited to Star Wars, and for this new slate of movies that reach beyond the core characters and story lines of Episodes I through IX.”

No details about Trank’s film have been revealed (we don’t know anything official about the subjects of any of the stand-alones), and we don’t know the release year yet. They aren’t necessarily announcing directors in the same order as the stand-alone films will be released, but I’d guess it’s likely that Trank will be helming the second one, which should hit theaters in 2018. Based on the possible subjects from the Hasbro presentation leak, it could be the “Solo” film. At the rate news is currently dropping, here’s hoping we’ll get specifics soon.
