HARRY POTTER Spinoff FANTASTIC BEASTS AND WHERE TO FIND THEM Gets a Release Date
By Amy Ratcliffe on May 13, 2014
Do you want to know where you can find magical creatures? The Harry Potter spinoff Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them could help you track them down, and you should get your net ready because the first film of the new Fantastic Beasts trilogy is set to hit theaters on November 18, 2016.
The story takes place in the same universe as the Harry Potter books, and J.K. Rowling published the book inspiration for the films in 2001. If it doesn’t ring any bells immediately, Rowling published the book under the pseudonym “Newt Scamander.” The idea is that the book is a copy of the textbook Harry Potter mentioned in Harry Potter and the Sorceror’s Stone. It’s a required book for first-year students at Hogwarts. Scamander is a magizoologist in the Potter universe and in his detailed book, he describes several magical species he observed during his years of travels across multiple continents.
In the film, Newt Scamander is the star. Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them will happen approximately seven decades before Harry Potter is born and set in New York. Presumably, that will be his home base and we’ll watch Scamander go on adventures as he studies creatures such as hippogriffs and pixies. Of course, that could quickly turn into an expensive and challenging CGI nightmare. Perhaps it will focus on a few of his grandest discoveries with one big creature featured in each of the three films. Whatever angle they go with, I’m not worried. Rowling is on board to write the script, and she’ll ensure the story is told in the best way.
