Here’s What You Should Pick Up on Free Comic Book Day

On the offhand chance you forgot that Free Comic Book Day is coming this weekend, here’s your reminder that Free Comic Book Day is totally this Saturday. Because I actually completely forgot. So this is good.

It’s also a chance to remind you that if you’re a long-time comics fan, try to make space for some of the kids and comics newbies – this is for them. Seriously, if I see one of you long-time comics fans loading up a crate with every book on the list because you absolutely have to have everything, we’re gonna have words, me and you.

Also: spend a little money.

Also: take the time to introduce yourself to another comic fan (new or old). Tell ‘em about books you like.

As for the lineup, there’s so much here to recommend, but I’m going to try to whittle it down to just a handful of options. While I want to recommend Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy, we’re going to be getting so much of that in the coming months that I think you can hold off. But if you have a young person (or are young at heart), the Kaboom! Summer Blast or the Bongo Comics Free-For-All really need to be in your bag as you leave the shop.

If history and excellent illustration are your thing, you could do far worse than Showa: A History of Japan or Hip Hop Family Tree Two-in-One (if you’re not reading the regular online installments of HHFT, you should remedy that immediately). If you can’t get to the shop, David Gallaher and Steve Ellis’ Only Living Boy will be available on comiXology from Friday at 11 PM to Sunday at 11 PM.

Finally, All You Need is Kill / Terra Formars should get you primed for this summer’s movie.
