The POINT BREAK Remake Has Found Its Johnny Utah
By Merrill Barr on February 24, 2014
As far as action classics go, few can top the awesomness of Kathryn Bigelow’s 90s surf flick, Point Break. The film is so beloved among action fans that it even became a major source of material for the second film in Edgar Wright’s Three Flavours Cornetto trilogy, Hot Fuzz. Surfing, masks, bank robbers, sky diving, friendship, honor, Swayze, Reeves, what’s not to love about this movie? Oh, and let’s not forget it was produced by James Cameron in the heyday of James Cameron excellence. So of course when word came three years ago that a remake was in development, the internet met the news with a less than stellar reception. But things have been quiet since that announcement – the only other major news being the casting of Gerard Butler as Bodhi. But as of today, the Point Break remake has found its Johnny Utah.
Luke Bracey, previously seen as Cobra Commander in G.I. Joe: Retaliation, will take on the role famously played by Keanu Reeves in the original film. In addition to Butler, Bracey will be teaming up with writer Kurt Wimmer (Equilibrium) and director Ericson Core (Invinsible) on the film, which is slated to begin production this summer.
As far as remakes go, there was no doubt Point Break was going to be tapped. It’s a film that sits just on the cusp of classic, but not enough so to make it untouchable. I mean, they remade Robocop for crying out loud. After that, everything’s fair game. Whatever the case may be for this upcoming film, as it stands now, the team put together isn’t half bad. So who knows, maybe we’re all being a little paranoid about protecting a fan favorite. Maybe this remake will actually end up being pretty good.
Now where did I leave my Reagan mask?
