The POINT BREAK Remake Has Found Its Johnny Utah

As far as action classics go, few can top the awesomness of Kathryn Bigelow’s 90s surf flick, Point Break. The film is so beloved among action fans that it even became a major source of material for the second film in Edgar Wright’s Three Flavours Cornetto trilogy, Hot Fuzz. Surfing, masks, bank robbers, sky diving, friendship, honor, Swayze, Reeves, what’s not to love about this movie? Oh, and let’s not forget it was produced by James Cameron in the heyday of James Cameron excellence. So of course when word came three years ago that a remake was in development, the internet met the news with a less than stellar reception. But things have been quiet since that announcement – the only other major news being the casting of Gerard Butler as Bodhi. But as of today, the Point Break remake has found its Johnny Utah.

Luke Bracey, previously seen as Cobra Commander in G.I. Joe: Retaliation, will take on the role famously played by Keanu Reeves in the original film. In addition to Butler, Bracey will be teaming up with writer Kurt Wimmer (Equilibrium) and director Ericson Core (Invinsible) on the film, which is slated to begin production this summer.

As far as remakes go, there was no doubt Point Break was going to be tapped. It’s a film that sits just on the cusp of classic, but not enough so to make it untouchable. I mean, they remade Robocop for crying out loud. After that, everything’s fair game. Whatever the case may be for this upcoming film, as it stands now, the team put together isn’t half bad. So who knows, maybe we’re all being a little paranoid about protecting a fan favorite. Maybe this remake will actually end up being pretty good.

Now where did I leave my Reagan mask?

  • Guess i’m cool with the remake, my problem was that they killed everyone off instead of keeping key people alive for a good sequel. For a longtime they were trying to make a sequel with Bodhi not really dying in the last surf scene & that mighta been cool but it sat locked up somewhere & never seen the light of day. I’m sure this remake is gonna spawn at least a sequel, hopefully it all don’t come out fucking retarded!!

  • Man. They really don’t need to do this. I get that the powers that be in Hollywood grew up with this film and now that they’re in a position of power feel this is something worthwhile, but it would seem to me that there’s a better way to spend $70 mil. The trouble with redoing this is that it’s not that great a story. It’s fun and actually still kind of holds up, but it exists comfortably in its own space and time.

  • yeah gotta agree with Doug B, Pointless Break sums it up. Point Break is still good, well cast and acted does not need a remake, why not try and write something new Hollywood and make a new freakin movie…

  • “Let’s not forget it was produced by James Cameron in the heyday of James Cameron excellence”? Let’s not forget it was directed by Kathryn Bigelow, who beat Cameron for Best Picture. Is this Nerdist or Sexist?

  • @Doug B….brilliant! And i agree completely.

Remakes by and large are a let down…thats not to say some dont do creative things or turn out interesting new takes….however a remake is COMPLETELY unnecessary when the original movie is perfect.

Examples include: Psycho, Willy Wonka, and Point Break.

Point Break is an outstanding action flick which i find endlessly rewatchable. Its just a blast. The casting, the set pieces, the play between Keneau and Swayze, the humor, etc. Its absolutely perect for the kind of movie it set out to be. An update will be by-the-numbers and will fall short.

Peace & Hoping they hire Busey to play his role again

  • “Action classic”? Really? Point Break is a terrible movie. It’s cult status is due to just exactly how bad the entire movie is. The remake will be just as bad if not worse because it will be unoriginal and based on shitty source material.

  • Entertainment is our biggest export. It’s almost the only thing we produce of any quality……OOPS, now that isn’t even true anymore thanks to terrrrrible remakes.

  • Hey why not can we get remakes of the good, the bad and the ugly, fist full of dollars,A few dollars more,Chinatown and Two jakes,Legend,Caddyshack,Police Academy, shall I keep going oh Lethal Weapon :-)
