STAR TREK IV: THE VOYAGE HOME Blooper Reel Is Priceless
By Amy Ratcliffe on January 30, 2014
Blooper reels are one of the highlights of any DVD or Blu-ray’s special features. It’s almost standard business now, but what about all the older films that hit video stores without any special features? Think of all the lost gag reels! Fortunately for us, the flubs from Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home were saved for posterity.
You won’t find any humpback whale hijinks in the footage, but there’s plenty of other hilarity to entertain you. The four minute reel mostly features the goofiness of William Shatner and Leonard Nimoy. They made quite the comedic duo back in the ’80s! And, it turns out Nichelle Nichols is charming even when she makes mistakes. Of course.
Nimoy was in the director’s chair for Star Trek IV, and it amuses me that even when he and the other actors ventured off on wacky tangents, he just let the cameras roll. Perhaps he knew that fans would one day laugh at him and Shatner improvising the correct change scene for an entire minute. For that, I give him my thanks.
Which blooper made you do a spit-take?
