PAN Finds Its Hook In Garrett Hedlund
by Eric Diaz on January 23, 2014
Deadline broke the news last night that actor Garrett Hedlund, best known for his role in Tron: Legacy, has officially received the offer to play the lead role of Captain Hook in Pan, the latest version of J.M. Barrie’s classic Peter Pan. Joe Wright is directing for Warner Bros. Apparently, it came down to Hedlund and Boardwalk Empire‘s Jack Huston, who can also be seen in American Hustle, along with Ezra Miller from The Perks Of Being A Wallflower. The script is by Jason Fuchs, and Greg Berlanti (Arrow) is producing this one under his Berlanti Productions banner.
In this take on the children’s classic, according to the original story at Deadline, “an orphan is taken to the magical world of Neverland, where he becomes the savior of the natives and leads a rebellion against evil pirates.” Hugh Jackman reportedly will play Blackbeard, the captain of the pirate villains, although Javier Bardem’s name has also been bandied about for that role. Warner Bros has set a June 16, 2015 release date for the movie, which takes over the slot left vacated by Batman Vs. Superman (or whatever it ends up being called). The move of the superhero flick left that weekend wide open for Warner Bros. to use. Hopefully this movie breaks the live-action Peter Pan curse that’s been in place for two decades now; the 2003 big budget version got decent reviews but was a box office bomb, and a decade before that, even Steven Spielberg’s Hook didn’t exactly set the world on fire. We’ll see if Warner Bros.’ version can fare better next year.
