J.J. Abrams And Lawrence Kasdan Now Writing STAR WARS: EPISODE VII

News just broke on Starwars.com that J.J. Abrams and Lawrence Kasdan will be taking over screenwriting obligations for Star Wars: Episode VII, which were originally being handled by Michael Arndt (Little Miss Sunshine, Toy Story 3). Not to take anything away from Mr. Arndt, who’s apparently “done a terrific job” progressing the script to where it currently stands, but the unveiling of this mega duo is sure to add more excitement for Star Wars fans (optimistic and pessimistic) everywhere.

SW-cover1Kasdan is known for his previous writing endeavors on The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi, while Abrams has his own list of accolades that include the hit series Fringe and Lost, as well as films such as Super 8 and Star Trek Into Darkness. Abrams was already set to direct the movie, but now with this pair at the helm of producing the script, the expectations for this film have doubtlessly been lifted. Can you feel the anticipation in your bones?

  • I wonder if Abrams was like “Arndt’s script makes me cry at the end, but ultimately not enough beloved characters are killed off and the villain is too clearly defined. I’ll take it from here.”

  • I think JJ’s ability to use genre set pieces and nostalgia could be great combined with Kasdan’s ability to make the humanity shine through all that other stuff.

I also wonder if they’re trying to get closer to consistent continuity… seeing as Kasdan and Kinberg were working together for a while, and Kinberg is sorta being groomed as a “continuity emissary” between the new content.

  • Wow. After Empire and ROTJ, my favorite Kasdan script is Silverado, he does a spectacular job putting everyone in a more real-world grey area. Kasdan has great cred, and I’m sure something pretty damned good will come out of partnering him with J.J. Abrams.

  • Jesus they’re letting abrams near the script? Has anyone actually watched into darkness? Lens flare, plot holes and bullsh*t recycling of old ideas is what we’re goi g to end up with.

  • Morgan Williams, you have the logic faculties of a rabid squirrel.

    (1) Lens flares aren’t written into a script.

    (2) Even so, Abrams has apologized about lens flares and promised to either not use them or tone then down for Star Wars.

    (3) Abrams didn’t write Into Darkness.

  • First off I did not know that Michael Arndt wrote both “Little Miss Sunshine” and ,”Toy Story 3″ ,which are movies I love ….WTF to that .
Now on to the news about J.J.(I can’t stand him ) Abrams and the other guy taking the job from Michael ,WTFF …..really . J.J. is not even a good director ,let alone writer .Without Alex Kurtzman & Roberto Orci the Star Trek movies would of been unwatchable (the actors helped too ) .
My god this is terrible news .

  • “The other guy”?

    RECORD SCRATCH, SON

You do realize “the other guy” wrote The Empire Strikes Back and Raiders of the Lost Ark, right? If that’s not worth something to you, why do you even care about the movie?

    YIKES.

  • RG, I wish I could “like” that.
The rumor is, despite the above quote of “done a terrific job”, is that Abrams and Kasdan are starting from square one. However, that doesn’t make sense as Arndts was supposed to be working from a treatment written by Lucas. Shouldn’t Abrams and Kasdan still be?

  • With Lawrence Kasdan involved? I can guarantee Fans will not see various irritations often found in JJ Abrams related television series & movies; no thanks to a certain script writer (remaining nameless so I don’t have to hear about his tweets later (lol) who seems to be the #1 target of every Fan’s shit list (and rightfully so) !
