AMC Announces Companion Series For THE WALKING DEAD

TWDzombiezA spinoff from The Walking Dead? Yes, please. And while it didn’t use the term “spinoff,” exactly, AMC announced today that it’s in what it describes as “the initial stages” of development for a “companion series” to TWD, and while there’s no description of what, exactly, that will entail, Robert Kirkman, Gale Anne Hurd, and David Alpert are on board as executive producers, so the pedigree is solid.

From the press release:

“Building on the success of the most popular show on television for adults 18-49 is literally a no-brainer,” said Charlie Collier, AMC’s president and general manager. “We look forward to working with Robert, Gale and Dave again as we develop an entirely new story and cast of characters. It’s a big world and we can’t wait to give fans another unforgettable view of the zombie apocalypse.”

“After 10 years of writing the comic book series and being so close to the debut of our fourth, and in my opinion, best season of the TV series, I couldn’t be more thrilled about getting the chance to create a new corner of The Walking Dead universe,” said Kirkman. “The opportunity to make a show that isn’t tethered by the events of the comic book, and is truly a blank page, has set my creativity racing.”

So… speculate away. What would you like to see from a spinoff? Which characters do you want to see in a different setting? How do you expect this will play out? Go ahead, dream of more zombies in the comments below while you wait for the flagship show to return on October 13th….

  • Walter White fighting through the Zombie apocalypse obviously. He could have his family tied to him like Michonne. Walt Jr. might slow him down a little bit too much though if he does that.

  • Can we see people who aren’t crazy and make intelligent decisions for a change? They don’t have to be geniuses, just smart enough to live on a steep hilltop or an abandoned missile silo. Maybe somewhere cold where they can go around beheading frozen zombies 6months out of the year.

I don’t care if it’s boring. The novelty value of it being the first zombie apocalypse show where survivors do clever things and triumph over brainless slow automatons would be fantastic.

  • I want stories showing the back stories to some of the zombies. You know they are going to died but it’s the how and why. There are tons of zombies “The little girl with the teddy bear or the suit zombie” from the first season. I would like to know if zombie Jim finds his zombie family. Or what happen to the gang bangers taking care of the elderly. Or the founding of Woodbury or what went down in the CDC before the end.

  • it would be nice if the post apocalyptic zombie world actually played an important role in the series instead of a conveniently changing back drop for a melodramatic soap opera.

  • For the love of Pete, a show where the female characters are not treated so poorly. Michonne being relegated to half a character, turning Andrea into a lovesick pup, Lori being killed as a punishment for having sex?! How obvious can you guys get?!

  • Would love to see more back woods people fighting off the zombies like Daryl and Merle. With the skills that they have it just makes sense that they would be the last type of survivors anyway. Or maybe do a FRIENDS version with some know it all Yuppies that can work a computer and iphone but are clueless in keeping themselves alive. Ha Ha that would make great tv.

  • They should continue with the character they had on the webisodes. If I was correct it was either Lori or Ricks brother. I want to see what happened to him. Maybe they could do a show about another group in a different part of the world. Possibly Canada because I live here or somewhere where the weather conditions would be different.

  • a group held up in an abandoned missile silo sounds good, or in the bunker where the president would have been held in the mountains, what about a group having to make there way south from canada to warmer climate. or maybe just in another city so where in the U.S.

  • I am intrigued but only if its a well written, directed, and acted show and not just obviously abusing the success of the show itself. Plus we are seeing a show already what other questions would the other series ask other than “what do you do during a zombie apocalypse”?

  • A little too soon for a companion (spin-off) series? I think it might just be. Most TV series, at least in the US, will wait until the current iteration of a show is completed before launching another show like it. AMC might have a good plan in place but, until I see it I’m going to be skeptical…as I think most fans will be.

  • Maybe pre zombie kind of before everything goes to hell, to show how maybe this whole thing started and putting the characters where they were living and showing there lives pre zombie.

  • It’s about the smart zombie who used the brick on the department store window (season 1). He’s like the MacGyver of the Zed world. Using paper clips and hangers to fish out brains from nostrils instead bashing heads and burning energy to get them out.

  • Gahhhh i just totally fan girled xD I CAN’T FUCKING WAIT. I would love to see Carl grow up and lead his own group. it would be awesome to see what kind of decisions he would make as an adult.

  • Everyone else has been too nice. What about following a group of marauders and raiders. They go from location to location just taking what they can from people and moving on. It seems that the show is always stuck on finding a safe place. When do they realize there is no safe place. I want somebody more neegan style in the show. Just bashing heads and taking supplies.

  • What about a team of people that build a solid war machine out of a semi-truck and trailer that goes around trying to reduce the zombie population and build high walls along highways and interstates in an effort to try and restore some of humanity. They could focus on making a trail to the oceans and bodies of water to get people safely living at sea, that could be good right?

  • Someone mentioned having the location be in a cold, frozen environment. They have done that in the comic book series…I was hoping they would eventually do that on the show. Maybe this companion series is being done so that they can keep the main show always taking place in Atlanta. (which is a lameass idea. eventually Rick’s group leave Georgia in the comics.)

Someone else mentioned focusing on the gangbangers taking care of the elderly people from Season One. In a deleted scene on the Season One DVD Set, they go back there and see that the gangbangers are all dead. I think that would be boring, anyway.

Also brought up was the desire to see the characters from the second webisode series, “Cold Storage”. I like that idea. I met the actress from that, Cerina Vincent (Cabin Fever), at a horror convention last year. I told her that I would like to see her and the male character on the main series, and she said she enjoyed filming the webisodes and would love to return to anything Walking Dead-related. Plus, she’s sexy as hell, so why not…

  • I think it would be interesting if each episode was about a different character or group and as the season progressed, their story lines crossed paths or two characters grouped up. Kind of like 400 Days, I guess.

  • 20 years in the future. Adult Carl is the leader of a super advanced zombie apocalypse city in the making. At this point the dead are decayed like crazy and the world is more about competing groups and reshaping society. A new group is trying to join Carls group, but he tells them they have to meet their elder. First episode ends when they go in and we meet old grey/ bearded Daryl.
