AVENGERS 2 Finds Its Ultron in James Spader
By Dan Casey on August 29, 2013
He’s managed Dunder Mifflin. He’s helped pass the Thirteenth Amendment. He’s helping the FBI catch the world’s most dangerous criminals. And now he’s going to destroy the Avengers, because that’s the logical next step for James Spader, who has been cast as Hank Pym’s deadliest robotic creation Ultron in Marvel’s Avengers: Age of Ultron. That’s right, folks, the rumors about Paul Bettany can be laid to rest because Joss Whedon has set Spader to play everyone’s favorite titular murderbot. And to make matters better, we have the exclusive first image of what Spader will look like as Ultron.
Pretty convincing, huh? One matter that has fanned the flames of fandom is the issue of Ultron’s origin. Canonically, Ultron was created by Hank Pym, but given that Pym has yet to appear in Marvel’s Cinematic Universe and likely won’t until Phase III in Edgar Wright’s Ant-Man, it’s still possible that there’s some credence to the plot points laid out in the Paul Bettany rumor, which you can read for yourself as I don’t want to spoil anything for anyone here. Unfortunately, that’s pretty much all we know at the moment. Smart money would be on Spader either doing mo-cap or simply providing the voice. Who knows? Maybe they’ll go full on Arnold Schwarzenegger’s Mr. Freeze and just cover him with some goofy ass adamantium tin foil.
See? Wouldn’t that be awesome? Come on, you know you’re thinking it. What do you think of this casting? Let us know in the comments below or hit me up on Twitter.
