Music Geek Track of the Week: Gita’s “Hood Rich”

by on April 26, 2013

All right, so this week’s track is sort of a slept-on/overlooked jam from 2012 that I recently discovered is a major “bad-bitch” anthem. SO mad that I wasn’t blasting this a year ago in Winnetka, Illinois at all the fly suburban moms who were trying to get their Lululemon/Komboucha vibe on.

Gita is a Bay Area native who now calls Harlem home and hangs with everyone from Grimes to the A$AP crew. Walking the line between G chick (“so I say, fuck the cops”) and cutie (puppy cameo), you get the sense that she has ghost-ridden a pink VW at some point. DJ Two Stacks, who also produced Oakland buddy Kreayshawn’s “Gucci Gucci,” lays down a groovy, ultra lounge/muzak instrumental, letting Gita handle the bars and, perhaps more importantly, the visuals.

Watch Gita as she 1) has a manga-themed slumber party, 2) twerks alone in the remnants of a frat’s highlighter/halloween party, 3) pistol-whips an ugly puppet on the set of The Lord of the Rings, and 4) has a dreadlocked peer spoon-feed her baby food. This is the closest I have seen a non-Azealia hip hop video come to a Kyary Pamyu Pamyu production, and in the words of Juicy J, it’s trippy mane. Her debut ep, Escaping the Dream World, will drop this May via ASL.
