Oh wow. Warren “the main man” Ellis! Sweet.
Skype interviews are really tough. I did one with Joel Watson recently and it definitely had some hiccups. You guys managed to pull it off pretty well, though. Plus Kyle Clark is always a welcome addition in my book.
Warren himself is one of my favorite writers. Transmetropolitan is easily one of my favorite series of all time and I always try and force others to read it. I think Kyle nailed it when he said that Spider isn’t someone you want to be friends with, but you do want to watch everything he does.
What a lovely fellow! I’ve read some of his stuff but never really heard any interview stuff.
As someone listening to this in their home in Southend-on-Sea, Essex, this one came as quite a surprise. I’m ashamed to say i hadn’t really heard of Warren Ellis but i’ll definitely check out his stuff now.

Maybe it’s just me, but his picture reminds me of Tom Hardy in Bronson.
I still like the overall rule about having interviews face to face, but this worked out good and it was the only way to have him on.
Oh, snap! Nice get – I remember being really excited about possibly meeting him when I moved to Southend almost exactly 11 years ago, but ended up seeing him only once, in a pub (and didn’t go talk to him). The guys at his local comics store were full of good stories about him, though.

What was with the reaction to the Nick Cave question? Is there some bad blood there or something? Haven’t found anything via Google yet. Will keep looking.

In my opinion, the reason Scott Pilgrim didn’t do well is because of the general populous’ contradictory attitude towards originality. People constantly bitch about wanting original movies, but when an original movie comes out, they’re put off by it. I’ve talked to several people who refused to see Scott Pilgrim because the trailers made the movie look really weird.
When people say they want originality, what they’re really saying is they want somewhat new stories wrapped in familiar packaging.
the timing of this is hilarious for me. we JUST re-watched the movie “Red” this past weekend. good stuff.

Warren Ellis was mesmerizing but, please don’t make Skype interviews common. If Ellis hadn’t been so engaging, the medium would have proved too distracting.

@Chris Hardwick – Please have more novelists on! They tend to be a pretty darned witty bunch! May I recommend a fella named Christopher Moore ( @TheAuthorGuy on Twitter ). He’s my favorite living author because #1. His books are witty (“Fool” especially), #2. The characters have heart (please read his “Beta Male Manifesto” if you have the time – I think it influenced a “Futurama” episode) and #3. Octavia E. Butler died (she would’ve been great on the podcast). IIRC, he’s mentioned recently he’s finished writing a new novel, so he’ll have something to plug soon!
