More “Doctor Who” 2013 Updates

As was previously posted by Perry, the BBC has announced that the next eight episodes of Doctor Who will air starting March 30th. The show hasn’t had eight consecutive weeks of episodes since back in 2010. Been too long. There is, however, more news about 2013’s Doctor Who action.

A schedule update was revealed at the 2013 London Toy Fair. The unofficial site doctorwhotv.co.uk posted a picture of a banner from BBC Worldwide stating that the 50th Anniversary would consist of a single 60-minute special following the 90-minute docudrama An Adventure in Time and Space, which chronicles the creation of the series back in 1963. That special is written by Mark Gatiss and, though it hasn’t been announced, the 50th Anniversary special will no doubt be written by The Moff. There will also be eleven 25-minute specials which will air once a month, presumably about each Doctor. We would definitely like to see more than simply that to commemorate the milestone, and there’s also nothing there about a Christmas special for 2013. Let’s hope they just didn’t post it because it was a given. More on this when we have more.

And finally, people in L.A. this weekend, come down to the Nerdist Showroom at Meltdown Comics on Saturday, January 26th, at 2:00PM for a FREE screening of the very first Doctor Who story ever, “An Unearthly Child.” As always, there will be trivia and giveaways which are always awesome stuff. It’s hosted by me and is 100% no charge. Click on this link to RSVP. Hope to see everyone there!

  • It’s actually sad that all we’re getting is a run of the mill 60 min special for the 50th its the same as the christmas special. I’ve been a fan of this show since the classic series was still on the air and for them to just do a 60 min special for the 50th is pretty appalling.

  • What do you mean Turlough (love the name). We’re getting as 90min making of/behind the scenes history of the franchise plus the 11 mini specials (for each Doctor?) plus the 60min special ep. That’s pretty awesome.

  • When? Are the specials due to air in December? That’s a long time to wait. Does anyone know the titles of the 25 minute specials each month so I can set my DVR? Don’t want to miss a minute of Who.

  • I know BBCAmerica is doing a series of Doctor Who specials (maybe once a month?) and will broadcast “The Aztecs” this Sunday. I thought it would be only 1 part, but could it be the entire story?!?

  • That is cool and all. But to put it to the point they didn’t really want to do some big adventure in the classic 3 doctors or 5 doctors style. They went with the lets rehash something showing some interviews and nothing new for the fans. Honestly I am disappointed. I would have liked to seen a huge announcement. For the 50th Anniversary we are doing a Children Of Earth 5 part movie that will feature The remaining Doctors with them all getting together to resolve the one question posed by the Silence. Now that would be news worthy and a lot better than the timey whimey of David Tennent or Still not Ginger but glad i am not a girl of Matt Smith. Lets be real the BBC dropped the ball. Heck a 60 minute movie on the small screen where matt meets jenny would be better and Jenny ran into the first doctors to bring a closure would be better.
