New “Man of Steel” Trailer Offers More Hints, Keeps Us Guessing

We’re used to Zack Snyder’s movies looking like stylized comic books, but it would appear that working with the top character in all of comicdom has pushed him in a different direction, visually – even as we see more footage of Man of Steel, it looks more and more like what would happen if Terrence Malick made an action movie. Not that there’s a damn thing wrong with that. It’s easy to imagine that Christopher Nolan’s oversight pushed Snyder more toward realism, but who can tell, really?
There are many reasons to do a frame-by-frame on this trailer, especially in the second part, wherein we get only brief glimpses of Michael Shannon’s General Zod, Russell Crowe’s Jor-El, a bare-chested Superman on fire, an unshaven Superman snarling like he’s Wolverine, and a whole lot of hovering spaceships that we figure Kal-El will start tossing around in the film’s climax.
Dunno what to make of Pa Kent telling little Clark that maybe he shouldn’t have saved a bunch of kids from drowning. Let us trust that it’s a moment of moral weakness. And we’re still dying to know – how does Superman shave?

There’s a couple different ways they’ve explained him shaving… Back in the day, his hair didn’t grow while on earth. In later years they’ve shown him shaving in the comic and cartoon with his heat vision and a mirror. And I believe on Lois and Clark they explained that after a certain length, the ends of the hair were dead, and therefore no longer invulnerable.
doesn’t superman shave by reflecting his heat vision off of a mirror? i remember during Superman Red/Blue phase (you know, the Dark Days) he tried it again and it shot him across the room.
Hmmmm…hopefully there won’t be an over reliance on CGI and green screen and some practical effects. It looks like it will be good but will Henry Cavill be in the Justice League movie?
I really like it, though your right about the Pa-Kent moment being questionable. There are a few fundamental things Smallville got right that should be in any superman movie, and for one, thats how Pa-Kent fully shaped Clark to be the hero he becomes with life lessons.

I think we’re ok on Jonathan’s comment about letting the kids die in the bus. I think it was just how they edited the clip or at least hope so. If you notice later on the comment is made “you just have to decide on the man you want to become.” I’m guessing this could be a teaching moment for Jonathan and the overall message is one we all expect. If not, this movie will probably be ruined for me because like mentioned before Jonathan is the key influence on Clark’s life and how he becomes Superman.
Could be very cool. Superman is, himself, a coat of gloss on anything in which he appears. If you put him in a glossy movie, you can’t watch it without squinting.
I think this approach may save certain overdone genres. Edgar Wright’s Ant Man and James Gunn’s Guardians of the Galaxy also promise those kinds of changes on the Marvel end, and though Snyder *may* ruin everything by doing it first, it’s still a very cool thought: big franchises making really nuanced films… nothing excites me more. Not just superheroes, either, but think about the rumored Star Wars spinoffs that could come after the new trilogy. Cool stuff.
