I’m your nerd host, Chris Hardwick
Nerdist is a place where we nerds come together and share the nerdery that we find. It's also my home to various elements of the Nerdist Empire. You might recognize me from TV. You don't realize that's where you know me from, but it is. You think you went to college with me or I look like your cousin's friend, but that is not the case. At one time or another you stumbled upon me on your moving picture box in such cerebral gems as MTV's "Singled Out" and Noam Chomsky's "Shipmates." and so much more...

Pete,
You need to listen to this. “Storm” Beat poem by Tim Minchin.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HhGuXCuDb1U
Isn’t this enough, just this world?
for your 200th episode you should just scream laugh in the mic for an hour and a half
“TO COMPLETION?!”
I always assumed it was spelled “krispy” and now my life is swirling out of control.
WHY IS IT NOT SHOWING UP ON ITUNES?! This is literally the worst day of my life. PETE, DO SOMETHING, HALP ME.
PS. Hey you should have Katie be a guest sometime!
Pete, I agree with you 100%. The idea of the woman \\agreeing to/wanting to\\ do the porn that I am watching is the turn on. The fact that a woman would do those things in front of a camera, for everyone to see… AND that there’s a seemingly infinite amount of porn and attractive women who are actually doing this, just blows my mind. In some ways, this disturbance to my psyche is one of the main negative effects watching porn has, and why it’s good to keep it under control.
anyway, i’m going to listen to the rest of the episode.
Congrats on the 100 episodes, your podcast is the best!
Shunck!
“The real healing now is acknowledging that it is still painful…” This is a free podcast?!
Thanks for talking about porn from a woman’s perspective, Chelsea -I think Pete needed to hear the trufax.
Is there anything better than ultra-vivid murder scenarios of your friends? I think not.
PH+CP=Flawless Episode.
Maybe get Mike Birbiglia next time.
“We are all a little weird and life’s a little weird, and when we find someone whose weirdness is compatible with ours, we join up with them and fall in mutual weirdness and call it love.” – Dr. Seuss
What the heck!? I love it the longer it goes and especially when it’s a great interview, I don’t care how long it goes. It just means I can listen to as much as I want at first and just finish it later if I need to. I work a desk job and I have very little pod casts I actually like so if I can spend it with Pete then it makes my time at work better. Keep it crispy Pete!
Pete, I completely lost my shit at your impression of Kumail getting fucked by you. Tears of laughter. Tears!
As one of the “trapped” people stuck in my office all day doing largely tedious tasks, thank you for continuing to create this podcast. For freebies. Chelsea should use her comedic powers for good, not evil! At least most of the time. Geez. She can be such a meanie weanie.
Keep it up Pete!
ps: I concur with the previous comment re: Katie as a guest!
I feel the need to agree with a couple comments already here. First off, YES have Katie as a guest on the show! It’d be really cool to hear her perspective on the shows, and what she does and all sorts of cool stuff like that. Also, holy shit the impression of Kumail was fucking flawless. I would seriously listen to that for a full hour. BEST. Oh, and fellow desk worker here who loves listening to this at work. FREE PODCAST?! Free podcast!
Interview Blaster Girl!
“You know that thing that a lot of people like? I wish there was less of it.” – Crazy People
was i the only one who found chelsea pretty awful in this
As a captive audience member, I’m a cook, I need these shows to last as long as possible. Otherwise, I’ll have to interact with my co-workers. Katie would be an awesome guest. And Chelsea is the perfect foil for the unbridled mirth of Pete.
It’s funny, even though Pete was being interviewed, I felt he talked less about himself that usual.
p.s. The Maron outgoing greeting was awesome.
Congrats on da hundo! Love the show, Pete! The show is never too long! Chelsea is totally wrong bout the hugs! Spilling your guts twice a week fosters a weird human connection that may not seem important but you make ME feel not so alone. It’s good. It’s good. See you at 200!!
This episode was pretty great. I love that the show always goes long, I don’t understand why that’s even an issue. If you think it’s too long why would you listen to it? Also, i know it’s kind of Chelsea’s thing to be critical and denigrating toward things but I wish she had seemed more enthusiastic about hosting this episode, after the first hour it felt like she thought of it was a chore for her to be there. I love the show and want nothing but green lights allowing Pete and the guest to make the show as entertaining as possible. Happy 100th episode!
Can’t have too much Chel, love her new PC
BTW, Johnny is the male equivalent of Katie. Thank you and good night.
CUM ON MY SIDEBURNS PETER
“It sucks to be trapped inside the meat spaceship of a man and be drawn to both.” Genius.
Pete, I forgot to email my question — maybe it will come up in some future episode? Love when you speak about favorite films & tv shows — I wondered if there are books that you feel strongly about? Tony Robbins & Malcolm Gladwell off the table!
I’m talking literature, poetry, short stories… What words inspire & delight Pete Holmes?
Also — oh how wonderful it would be if Key and/or Peele were future guests…
Congratulations on your 100th Weirdiversary and thank you, from the bottom of my heart, for the honesty, hilarity, & deeply human weirdness of your episodes.
HAPPY 100th BIRTHDAY YOU MADE IT WEIRD!!!!
I think Pete’s laugh is more of an acknowledgement of something awkward (with the acknowledgement that awkward moments are a crossroads between turning serious or turning funny) and its duration is related to the time required to turn it from awkward into funny, in an attempt to force the general feel of the awkward situation from straying into serious and instead moving it into lightheartedness.. It’s tough to continue thinking of an awkward situation as a serious criticism with HAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA going on in the background in response to the akwardness, almost to the point of becoming tired of the HAAA noise and just relenting to an “ok fine we’ll go with this as lighthearted”.. In a religious sense, it could be a kind of spirit of reconciliation, an attempt to unite people to a common, generally positive perspective that to let everyone’s mind stray into downer territory.. and I say that in a good way (with hugs).. ~_^
Congrats on 100 eps, the show is still fresh and entertaining.
The porn discussion was cringe-worthy, though. It’s an incredibly damaging industry, and I’d urge you to read up on it. Just because you think a woman has consented to be filmed, doesn’t mean she has. Some links: http://gynocraticgrrl.tumblr.com/post/35218492404/tw-rape – a good compilation of quotes from pornographers and porn actors. http://www.shelleylubben.com/ has a lot of videos from porn actors revealing the truth behind porn.
I am waiting for the 101st episode called “Chelsea apologizes.”
Well, this is awful. I don’t know if Pete just hopes to fuck Chelsea or what, but there’s no need for her to ever be on this podcast again. She’s incredibly terrible. Next time get Kumail or, well, anyone else.
It seems to me that this calls for a spin-off podcast consisting entirely of Pete awkwardly and timidly asking Chelsea and Katie questions about their porn consumption and then steadfastly refusing to believe the answers that he is given.
Congrats on 100 episodes. Fan since Phantom Menace (episode one) and loved literally every one of them. Spent probably a week of my life with you in that time (I say that in the least creepy way possible) and look forward to your continued success. I love clicking on a new episode and seeing that it is 2 hours, especially with an awesome guest like Chelsea. I always set aside time to listen to this podcast with no other distractions. I don’t listen while working, cleaning, or playing video games. I sit back and listen to this like I would sit and watch a movie. Listening is all I’m doing for the 1-2 hours that it plays.
I look forward to many more episodes, and hope you continue the podcast and the show for a long time. Glad to see you’re still humble while rolling in millions from E*Trade and Comedy Central. Do a show in Vegas sometime.
Thanks to Katie also. Best podcast producer working right now. I know i’m not the only one that enjoys more Katie-Produced entertainment every week than anything else. I listen to more hours of podcasts than hours of watching TV by far. Most of which are here at Nerdist.
I really enjoyed this episode and laughed a lot, especially during Pete’s church song–fucking hilarious! Also I liked learning that the genesis of your comedy came from your attempts to keep the peace in a tumultuous household. As an ex-Christian and former people pleaser myself, I can relate. A lot of feelings get stuffed down, and now you are going through a healthy rebellion of that earlier repression. You’re doing great, and the show is awesome! Yeah, it’s not for everyone, just for those of us who get it.
I thought Peretti was great, since her wheelhouse is being glib and dismissive (… in a good way). Very interesting to hear her being genuine and engaged — felt like eavesdropping on Pete/Chelsea while they’re backstage. I guess that ‘s what this podcast does best, which is cool.
By the way, really enjoyed both your recent shows at the Lincoln Lodge. Not sure which dog bit I thought was funnier: Chelsea’s grandma keeping that dog captive, or Pete dropping his friend’s dog.
I’m so happy for Pete- this is a great podcast. That said, I’m no longer going to tune in when Chesea Peretti is on. Her need to continually make sure people hear her say how much she doesn’t care/like/respect Pete makes for an extremely uncomfortable listener experience. Chelsea fixates on only the topics that can switch the focus to her. (What’s your least favorite bit of mine? Do you j-off to me me me me?). This was clearly a day for her to be her more genuine self and she definitely blew this for me. She beat that ‘joke’ to death for 90 minutes then picked it p and beat it again for that last drop of attention. I’m not against roasts and sarcasm – but this was a desperate cry for something else.
Pete was as hysterical as one can be while under assault. I love when he goes into dick-n-vag anatomy class talk and the concept that preachers are attention hounds was a great thought. I wanna chat anatomy weirdness with Pete.
I agree with Marie. PETE, pleeeeease sing more of your gospel choir songs. It was hilarious! also i really appreciate the longer podcasts. keep it up buddy!
Pete, I love you man. Keep it simple, you have overblown the Angel/Whore thing. It does exist and it’s not this divisive thing. It’s a woman being in touch with her femininity and feelings. This is the religious background again, and it’s both in your perception and in her hang-ups. We’ve got similar backgrounds. An empowered woman that is interested in you will flirt and be a sex object to get your interest. That doesn’t automatically make her a whore, that makes her a woman. When you take her to your parents’ house she’s a class act, and thus your angel. It’s not like you take her to meet the folks and she just starts grinding on dad for singles. So it’s not this divisive thing, it’s just a woman meeting her full potential.
Same with guys, there aren’t just nerds and jocks. There are confident men who aren’t too scared to be educated and can still stand up for themselves. I think that’s us living up to our full potential.
The problem is people just give up. Generally you get comfortable, quit trying and lose the nice whore aspect or you stop being her man and try to make her your new mommy.
And this is all getting reflected back at you, cause we’re all self-absorbed meat suits. You see an angel/whore divide because you don’t know which you want aka you don’t know what you want to be yourself. You can indulge your manly impulses and you can cry when you need to. You don’t have to pick a persona, just keep evolving! Chelsea date’s “bros” with dumb tough-guy facades, because she so desperately holds onto her sarcastic tough-girl facade. It’s fear, and it’s getting reflected back by scared dudes playing tough.
…here’s hoping I’m < 50% full of shit.
I thought you’d enjoy seeing what I found out about your good buddy John Mulaney. He lives a secret double life, as the lead singer of the above average band Fun.
I found him out while watching the SNL Louie hosted: http://i.imgur.com/AobHC.jpg
I feel like I ‘got’ Chelsea this time. It’s like Jonah Ray shitting on Matt Mira, dialed way up, but this episode was relaxed enough for the affection between Chelsea and Pete to poke back up between the cracks.
Also, the story about the two-dimensional people being visited by a sphere is called Flatland.
Keep the hugs coming, it may be a little odd, but as someone you’ve hugged I found it to be very genuine and kind. Just ’cause it’s a little odd doesn’t mean it’s bad.
Also, love Chelsea!
Pete, I enjoy the long episodes and I’m not a ‘trapped’ listener. I am in a cubicle but I have to pause the episode multiple times so I can talk to a co-worker or do something that requires a bit more attention. Sometimes it take a whole day to listen to an ep but that’s great! I listened to an episode for How Did This Get Made and the second half of this YMIW over the course of 8 hours so I had entertainment all day. Also we met after one of your shows and you did not ask me to hug nor did I want one but you did have a fine handshake.
The second hug was better than the first, but I have had a few friends who met you tell me how awkward they felt. Then, I heard you didn’t like hugging people because it was awkward for you, and I felt bad for invading your space. Do what you’re comfortable doing.
GREAT episode. The standout moments: Pete’s impressions of Kumail (“cum on my muscles and my sideburns!”) and the commentary on the authenticity of Kumail’s Twitter avatar (I just looked at the pic, and now I’m laughing even harder). Also, the picture that Chelsea paints of Pete’s default sexual fantasy–Chelsea tickling Pete’s balls and disappearing in a poof of dust, followed by Katie drawing the curtains as Pete’s ex-girlfriends march into the room. Have you seen Chelsea’s bit “All My Exes” on YouTube? Pete’s version of that would apparently be a better fit for XTube.
For those who dislike Chelsea because she’s too “mean”, hello! That’s part of the schtick! I reckon Pete invites Chelsea on fully expecting that she’s going to bust his balls, right after she tickles them. It’s silly, good-natured insult comedy. I know you’re protective of Ol’ Petey Pants, but lighten up. Sheesh.
The problem with Chelsea hosting wasn’t that she’s too mean, it’s that her schtick got in the way of hosting. It’s like that kid in high school that put up the front of apathy and made fun of people to look cool and wouldn’t try to hard for fear of being labeled a nerd. That person is fine as a foil and guest, but don’t ask them to teach the class cause they’ll spend the whole time acting like their too cool, and we won’t get anything out of it.
The premise was great, I think we’d all like to hear the snarky Pete who shits on other comedians and is a bit abrasive but we never got there cause there was no real attempt or control. She wasn’t even listening or expounding on his answers, we could hear her lack of response as she was scrolling ahead to find the next question. Maybe we are too harsh, and she’s a little green in the interview world. Pete didn’t listen to people when he started this either. I just would have enjoyed more eagerness than a last minute twitter “anyone got a question for Pete?”
Katie should be a guest! It must be really interesting to hear her perspective and her inside info being that she produces so many podcasts.
I didn’t hear anything after Pete saying “I want to wake you every day by cracking you in the head with an oar.” Could. Not. Stop. Laughing.
Always hug. That’s great.
Ugh, Chelsea is the worst. I was looking forward to the 100th episode, but found that I was struggling to get through it. Chelsea was not a good choice for this. Part of what makes the show great is Pete’s unabashed enthusiasm for everything, no matter how silly, and Chelsea is the complete opposite of that, and felt like it was stifling the show.
I get that Chelsea and Pete are friends, and maybe her shtick is funny in real life, but it just doesn’t jive with the feel of the show.
I think “Also, this sucks” is going to be my new go-to catchphrase after peeling off my sweatpants in front of my girlfriend
