I’m your nerd host, Chris Hardwick
Nerdist is a place where we nerds come together and share the nerdery that we find. It's also my home to various elements of the Nerdist Empire. You might recognize me from TV. You don't realize that's where you know me from, but it is. You think you went to college with me or I look like your cousin's friend, but that is not the case. At one time or another you stumbled upon me on your moving picture box in such cerebral gems as MTV's "Singled Out" and Noam Chomsky's "Shipmates." and so much more...

Aww shit, it didn’t work!
That was supposed to be an ASCII Picard Facepalm.
@JetpackBlues – I figured that was either Picard or Homer Simpson. Works either way!
And I got your e-mail just fine this time.
For those interested in Carl and Mel’s nightly hangouts you catch a glimpse in Mel’s episode of ‘Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee’. Definitely check it out!
Well I guess I’m going to have to splurge on the box set as an early gift to myself. The ‘Putting on the Ritz’ scene has always been my favorite part of YF, interesting to hear that Mel thought it would cheapen the movie. Overall my new fave episode of Nerdist, but then again I find myself saying that every week lately… Keep up the amazing work!
Folks, that was just f*&#ing awesome. Mel is a treasure, and he ain’t one damn brick shy of a load either. Still sharp and funny.
Listened and enjoyed the show for a long time now. This ep. was a real special treat.
What should we call ourselves, this club of nerdistites? The quemmenters? The nerdist collective? The incredibly cool and awesome people?
@Jake: We are minions. Just ask Patty.
me love mel. mongo straight!
This was so amazing! I listened to it over two days at work because I kept getting interrupted but it was so worth the frustration (stupid place that pays me expecting me to take out the headphones occasionally)! As soon as I heard Mel’s voice I just knew this was going to be epic. The enjoy your burrito ending is amazing!!! I want it as my ringtone too!
Holy hell that was incredible. Like ridiculously incredible and I’m kind of freaking out that I got to listen to it. Fo’ FREE!
I vote for the fish-slapping dance to be the handshake, if there’s voting, because it seems the most logical of choices. You know. Hitting people in the face with fish and whatnot.
@Jetpack – the facepalm picard was perfect
@JetpackBlues – Nuh-UH! Ya’ll are MY “minions!”
:SUMMONING CLAP:
Mama needs a Twix bar!
Ok, this kind of made me teary. Probably one of my faves.
@Patty
I only count six or seven of us. Everyone knows you need at least ten to make a minyan.
@Doctor Quemmento – Good one, Rabbi.
The Mel Brooks episode was really really really great. One thing I noticed during his interview was his interest in opportunities through podcasting (e.g., revenue). It reminded me of the Joan Rivers interview, she was kind of asking similar questions too. It really says a lot about how driven and hungry these super successful people are, and how they’ve stayed relevant over the years.
Oh @Dr Quemmento you are so punny
@Jake I know. Welcome to Doctor Quemmento’s Boutique of Shoddy and Questionable Puns. Est. 1985.
Got chills when Mel Brooks said: “Enjoy your Burrito”
Mel Brooks splitting an enemy’s head open over caviar and blinis at the russian tea room with Ann Bancroft is probably the best old school showbiz story I’ve heard.
This is probably my favorite episode yet! It was really nice to hear stories from Mel and laugh along with ya’ll. I listen to Nerdist while I travel because it helps me pass the time driving. Thank you Chris for adding some color to an otherwise B&W part of my life!
Any one know where a video clip of the American Comedy Awards that Mels plays for them is?
I’m a HUGE Mel Brooks fan from WAAAY back (I have the box set of 2000 Year Old Man albums on vinyl if that sets a bar) – this is the best interview with Mel I’ve ever heard. Excellent job, Chris! Thanks for bringing this to us!
(Now, suck it up and call Tom Lehrer! You’re READY!!!)
Ken in Denver – “(Now, suck it up and call Tom Lehrer! You’re READY!!!)”
Me – FARK YEAH MUTHER-FARKERS!!!!!
Great job by the Nerdist gang by keeping focused at the interview at hand and not giggling like little school girls throughout. I say that cuz that’s what I would have done if I ever hanged out with Mel Brooks in his office!
Listening to this episode was like listening to old family stories from a favorite uncle or grandpa…
BTW, thanks to Tim for mentioning comediansincarsgettingcoffee.com, there was some awesome stuff there — NOT AS AWESOME AS NERDIST.COM THOUGH!
The Twelve Chairs resulted in a pretty serious Frank Langella crush about forty years too late. Love that movie.
Listening to Matt, Jonah, and Chris with Mel Brooks is definitely the best way to procrastinate my homework! The sad part though is that my homework is character creations for one of my Film Making classes. There’s something ironic in that.
… Wait, can I use this as a research excuse??
