I’m your nerd host, Chris Hardwick
Nerdist is a place where we nerds come together and share the nerdery that we find. It's also my home to various elements of the Nerdist Empire. You might recognize me from TV. You don't realize that's where you know me from, but it is. You think you went to college with me or I look like your cousin's friend, but that is not the case. At one time or another you stumbled upon me on your moving picture box in such cerebral gems as MTV's "Singled Out" and Noam Chomsky's "Shipmates." and so much more...

@Phil: actually, we’re getting zero backlash. A movie like TDKR is one of the highest grossing films and it came out months ago. Certainly if it were a week old we wouldn’t have said anything, but after a certain point with a huge movie I don’t think we can be held responsible for spoiling anything. If this movie was really important to someone they would have seen it by now, and we can’t not talk about things just because they didn’t get around to it yet–that’s kind of on them. Also, this info is all over the Internet, so that’s why I felt safe talking about it.
And thanks for the quemment!
I’ve been a rabid listener of the Nerdist podcast for almost 2 years now. It’s one of my favorite shows. For some reason I never reviewed the show on itunes until today. I just finished the Joseph Gordon-Levitt episode and I can’t stop smiling. What a fantastic podcast. This is the Episode I will point people to when they ask me why I always have headphones on.
Only downside is no Matt or Jonah, was nice to have Kyle in there though.
Thank you Chris.
It’s okay to still lust after Jennifer Connelly in Labyrinth if I’m the same age as her right? ….RIGHT?
Looking forward to this podcast, but I don’t see movies until they’re on DVD (I’m a home-bound young-old cripple), so I haven’t seen TDKR, which I’m also looking forward to, so… seeing Chris comment above, I guess about a spoiler… should I just skip this one? No biggie if so, plenty of other content to fill my earholes.
@Admiral Kent
I think that falls into the “Harmless Creepy” quadrant of deviant sexual behavior. Y-axis is Normal/Creepy and X-axis is Harmless/Seek Immediate Therapy.
This is, of course, according to the findings of Doctor Quemmento’s poorly documented study conducted at, and funded by, the University of I Just Made This Shit Up Right Now.
Doctor Quemmento: Good enough for me!
Great podcast! I get the feeling that a lot hosts are intimidated by JGL because of his career path since Third Rock. But he’s just fun, silly, young (and apparently nerdy) dude! Not to mention quite attractive!
I might have to start one of those find a nerdy friend campaigns for Chris’s Nashville show. Can’t wait!
@Patty Marvel @Phil – I figured out what was up with emails. Jetpack, the plugin used for comment moderation, had a bug. I use it on my page and they JUST released a bug fix for it.

This interview is a testament to Chris Hardwick’s skill; when Chris asked about dating, Joe just responded with “Yeah, it’s tough…” and kind of laughed it off so Chris dropped the subject and moved on. Also at the end, regarding his late brother, I could feel a sense of gratitude from Joe that he got to speak openly about him without fear of any inappropriate questions because at that point in the interview, he knew he could trust Chris. This goes down as one of my favorite Nerdist shows ever, this is right up there with Bill Burr/Reggie Watts.
2 of my favorite people came together for what is now one of my favorite podcast episodes. Every topic was fun and/or meaningful and it was a great listen. I hope to see the next Top-Secret project for The Nerdist Channel, featuring Joe as ‘Labyrinth Master – Toby’s Return’
I love your pod your are an awesome group of poders i love you all best time of my week is when there is a new nerdist. Thank you for turning me on to ben folds five . joe is such a nice guy and you really bring it out of the celebs you have on your show . chris you have a heart of gold . i feel like i got a best friend whom i have never met . love you guys keep it up.
make that D&D thing happen.. you have the blueprint with the Penny Arcade live D&D sessions.. and their D&D podcasts are hilarious too
Is it just me, or is this podcast on iTunes listed as Adam Corolla?
It *is* #264, right? Am I missing something?
Yet another great episode, folks. With Joe bringing up D&D, and Chris having mentioned playing it several times in the past, I think it would be an awesome idea for the Youtube Channel to throw together a “Table Top” type series introducing people to the game. It probably wouldn’t be too hard to get some collaboration from Wizards of the Coast since they don’t currently offer any sort of well-produced video introduction to the game. As someone who is hoping to start D&D for the first time over the next few months, it would be a resource I would find extremely helpful.
Just a thought! Keep up with the great content.
What a lovely guy JGL is. Great episode.
Enjoying more and more the Matt-less podcasts. Kyle is a great addition and Jonah… sure, he can come back.
Joseph Gordon-Levitt, the “Tom Hanks” of Generation Y.
Except, “Nerdier”… In a good way.
Oh crap, now someone’s going to re-make “You’ve Got Mail” based in the present.
Quick, someone tell me how to delete a comment, before this gets out of hand!
Anyone other than me think that Kyle kind of ruined this podcast. There was a nice flow between Joseph and Chris when Kyle awkwardly forced himself into the conversation. There was a definite change of feel to podcast. Way to butt in and make it about you…”Yes, lets talk to one of the biggest acting stars and have an intern join us in the conversation.” Sometimes Chris just needs to be a dick and stop that from happening.
Loved this episode. I like Joseph since 3rd Rock From The Sun, and loved him in every movie I’ve seen him in [most recently, 50/50, which I thought was beautiful, as I said in Anna Kendrick thread]. Can’t wait to see Looper…
Softest hands in Hollywood, Tony Danza? Shake hands with Patton Oswalt sometime!
Don’t let the world fool you into thinking you don’t have time for a great D&D game! I’m in two bands, work full time, go out drinking (ie have a social life) and STILL manage to get into my RPGs.
Big C! Your BFF Wil Wheaton has starred in a series of D&D podcasts with Penny Arcade. I’m sure he can introduce you and set up a session of D&D with Chris Perkins, DM to the stars.
In addition to Icosahedrophilia mentioned already, Critical Hit is really good for an actual D&D play podcast. Great story, outstanding DM’ing and really an excellent intro to 4th edition.

I love this podcast, but this is the first time that I’ve been prompted to comment. I lost my older sister almost two years ago, so I know what Joseph Gordon-Levitt is going through. Excellent job navigating this part of the interview, Chris. It’s such a gift when someone asks about your sibling instead of just asking about his/her death. This podcast has brought me to laughter many times, but this is the first time it brought me to tears. Again, great job.
Huge hugs for Joe & Chris! I am (in addition to being a huge fan of the podcast) part of a couple of regional Burning Man groups – Midwest Burners & Gateway Burners (St. Louis) It’s nice to not hear it just labeled as drunk, lewd, naked hippies on X. I volunteer my ass off, in addition to camping with HATEDOME™, the neighborhood bar everybody loves to HATE™.
Shameless plug: Come to Interfuse 2013!!! It’s a roughly 1200 person regional burn in Laquey, MO and is much more intimate than Burning Man.
