Musician, writer, spoken word artist, activist and all around AMAZING guy, Henry Rollins is on the show! He sits down with Chris, Jonah, and Nerdtern Kyle Clark to talk about being a workaholic, the music industry, and how Kyle and his family are such big Henry Rollins fans, they affectionately called him “Uncle Henry!”

Henry is one of my favorite people on the planet. Extraordinary brain that man has, as you now know. And he’s not BSing you when he says that anyone can meet him. I can’t count the number of times I’ve seen him – music or spoken word – over the years, and after every show he’s been hanging out willing to shake a hand, sign a ticket or shoot the bull. Thank you, Henry, for another great hour+ of intellectually stimulating conversation with cool peeps.

  11. Thanks ever-so for having Rollins on. I’ve talked to him a couple of times, just in passing, and consider those moments two of the most conversationally-engaged moments I’ve had in my entire life. If Nerdist listeners listen to at least one of the bands mentioned, coming to that music new, and find something they love, that would be awesome. More music is always a good thing.

  13. Love the spoken word that Kyle brings up toward the end of the show. I think in the same spoken word show, Henry talks about his nude scene in Sling Blade..which i thought was the best story i have ever heard tell in my life

  14. another vote for Jello Biafra, would be very interesting. I once saw the man speak at the Henry Fonda Theater several years ago. he spoke for SEVEN HOURS. It was unbelievably long, but incredibly captivating.

    Regarding that spoken word show he was talking about and trying to track down since he saw it on Comedy Central circa 2000. It was a special that CC filmed at Dingwalls in London in May 1999. It’s called Henry Rollins Live and Ripped From London. It was eventually released on DVD as a bonus disc on Henry’s 2008 Provoked spoken word album.

    I’ve known of Rollins since Black Flag punk days, but he’s certainly a new inspiration for getting things done; will know have to seek out more of his modern work.

  23. @Patty Marvel – Quasars are the orphans of space, in a way, are they not? Lonely beacons of intense light and heat, more than many galaxies, only observable after billions of years due to the vast expanses in both time and space between them and us…. and I like to sniff them. OK, I don’t know how that makes them like orphans (except for the sniffing part), but I do acknowledge your Lemony Snicket reference and say, “well-played.”

    Anyway…. Henry, seriously, one record a day? How do you keep track of that stuff? Do you even listen to it? Still, as a metalhead, I got super-excited when the High on Fire/Sleep discussion occurred. SO fucking good.

  26. If I had Twitter I would Tweet this to NerdTern Kyle, so here’s hoping he gets this-
    Kyle mentioned he was really getting into the folk punk scene and the Pomona scene in particular. I was wondering what venue was he referring to?
    AND if he has heard of Andrew Jackson Jihad (out of Phoenix), OR Pat the Bunny, a sort of troubadour of the folk punk scene. Currently the frontman of Ramshackle Glory, but also known for past projects- Wingnut Dishwashers Union, Johnny Hobo and the Freight Trains.

    And on the rare chance Henry Rollins glance through here, I bet he will like the stoner metal band, Young Hunter (Tucson, AZ).

  28. Henry Rollins is an intelligent and thought-provoking man, a philosopher for the Nerdist Century. Please bring him back or offer him his own podcast. Anyone that can make Chris Hardwick sound giddy like a schoolgirl and able to speak only in sentence fragments deserves repeat business.

  29. I have a freebie list with my boyfriend, men I’m allowed to cheat on him with, and Hardwick and Rollins are both on that list. Now finding out they were in the same room together….2 birds 1 stone? Haha, in all seriousness, I’ve learned my work ethic from him.

  34. I didn’t know a huge amount about Henry Rollins before this podcast. Absolutely loved this episode. What an inspiring guy. Loved that he was talking so enthusiastically about music before he even realised you were already recording.

    The only thing missing was Matt trying to convert Henry to the ways of the Dave Matthews Band…. Next time, perhaps?

  35. Thanks for this great podcast and hello from Finland. I was attending that festival where Henry and Iggy played. I’ve seen Iggy many times but this was out of ordinary! After the band left stage he danced by himself for five minutes. It was great. Anyways, it’s always great to hear Henry Rollins.

    I can only imagine his thoughts on DMB but his documented musings on Edie Brickell and the New Bohemians probably provide some clues.

  38. Just wanted to add my voice to what appears to be a unanimous declaration of love for this episode, and the accompanying respect deserved toward Henry Rollins. I also second the idea for offering Henry his own podcast through Nerdist Industries. I’m not sure when he’d find the time to do it, but if that ever became a reality, I’d subscribe to that in a heartbeat!
