Reach Out to the Doctor Who-Deprived

I had just posted the article about how Mike Nelson of Rifftrax/MST3K fame had tweeted that he’s never seen Doctor Who — you didn’t read it yet? Click here, why don’t you — when I got forwarded this video that addresses Mike’s very situation.

BBC America is promoting Doctor Who with a Twitter campaign, #newtoWHO, that aims to have Whovians get non-Whovians aboard the TARDIS by tweeting about the first time they experienced the wonders of the Doctor with that particular hashtag. Oh, look, a convenient link that inserts all the hashtags and other stuff for you!

Anyway, the video is an appeal in support of the campaign from noted Whovian Chris Hardwick, explaining why your help is urgently needed. It’s not too late. With your help, Whovianism will be universal. DO IT.

    I’ve Never seen Doctor Who. I’ve ever been impressed with any British Sci-Fi.

    My dad used to watch UFO/Space 1999 and they gave me the creeps. Pretty much anything made by Gerry and Sylvia Anderson invoked a mental gag-reflex.

    Baker-era Doctor Who looked like a bad stage play on a local access channel (the few minutes remember seeing of it on PBS). Plus, watching my dad get mocked, for no reason, at a con by a Baker-era cosplayer (wearing the entire get up in July) dragging a plywood K-9 just put me off anything DH related.

  6. @JetPackBlues Buffy is the greatest show in tv history. Doctor Who is just as good. If you can let go of the fact that the monsters (with the exception of the weeping angels), are fairly cheesy, you’ll be hooked. It has only been two weeks for me – seriously. All of this Nerdist Whovian Water Torture finally broke me, and I pulled the first new one up on Netflix. Today, I was looking on Pinterest how to turn my guest bathroom into a TARDIS.

  7. @AngieK – Never saw an episode of Buffy either & I have my own issues with Joss Whedon.

    I’m starting to think I’m a bad nerd for not liking these things.

    I also think that modern Who might be worth the effort, if I can get over my impressions of it. We’ll see.

  8. @JetpackBlues Heres the thing, when Who was brought back in 2005, it had a different style. It was still Doctor Who, so old fans could connect with it, but it had a fresh feeling that you don’t get from watching the older ones. Then within the refreshed who, there are 2 eras, The Moffat era, and the Russell T. Davies era. I suggest you start out with the Moffat era, which begins with series 5, then you can go back to series 1, and go up from there. If you really want to get into it, that would be the way to do it.

  9. I’m ashamed to admit that I came late to the Doctor Who game.

    Must’ve been around 1989. It’s a bit hazy, I’m not sure if my first encounter with the Doctor were reruns of Colin Baker or then current episodes with Sylvester McCoy. But the first Doctor I actively remember is 7 — McCoy. In fact, my first conscious experience with Doctor Who was the serial “The Curse of Fenric”. So McCoy will always be MY Doctor. And Ace! Oh boy, what a gal. Tough, sassy, independent. Shaped this adolescent’s views of awesome female characters forever.

    Unfortunately, that year marked the end of classic Who. But I was there when Doctor Who finally came back in 2005. And I’ve stayed with it ever since.

    I’m so looking forward to the 50th anniversary. McCoy’s still active (see this little independent movie called “The Hobbit”), so how about a classic multi-Doctor special maybe? This would so make my day. Hell, it would make my century.
