It’s Nerdist Channel Launch Day!!!: A Fancy Letter from Chris Hardwick
By Perry Michael Simon on April 2, 2012
For today’s launch of the Nerdist Channel on YouTube, our founder Chris Hardwick has written a welcome message for Nerdist News that explains all and adds some details about the initial schedule. Take it away, Chris:
Welcome, welcome and WELCOME to the birth of the Nerdist Channel! Today, we place ourselves before you — naked, bloody and screaming but most importantly ALIVE with excitement and possibility. This programming exercise dates back to July of 2011, when my then new business partner Peter Levin and I walked into a modest office in Santa Monica with the Jim Henson Company and Broadway Video to pitch to the YouTube Elder Council what we felt was some much needed caulk in the gap of quality nerd-themed programming in world (not as filthy as it sounds).
Our programming mandate was simple: what would WE want to see exist in the world? Unlike many production companies or networks, we are actually IN the demographic of the content we’re creating. This means no charts. No spreadsheets. No “the coveted 18-24 year old demo seems to trend toward the color orange. We must program orange things.” We program stuff we love. All of our shows are very personal and we’re very passionate about what they represent.
By now, you may have seen our teaser videos which highlight some of the shows and folks who will be working with us, and I can honestly say that I still can’t believe we were able to wrangle so many wonderful and talented folks. We won’t be releasing all of our shows at once (your timeline will thank us for this), but rather in cycles to keep your viewing time manageable. Our first cycle includes the following shows:
MONDAYS: All Star Celebrity Bowling (with me, Chris Hardwick!)
TUESDAYS: Alternating every other week between Face to Face w/ “Weird Al” Yankovic and The Indoor Kids
WEDNESDAYS: Comic Book Club
THURSDAYS: Ain’t It Cool w/ Harry Knowles
FRIDAYS: Weird S#!t From Japan and classic Kids In The Hall eps with bonus cast interviews
We’ll also be adding a bunch of existing library content from Henson, Broadway Video, Dr. Tran, Hard ‘n Phirm, Nanna & Lil’ Puss Puss and many more just to give these guys a more permanent home. In the coming months, expect other shows to roll out with folks you’ve heard of like Neil Patrick Harris, Neil deGrasse Tyson and Rob Zombie to whipsmart folks you haven’t heard of (but will enjoy) covering things like science, comics, gaming, cosplay, tech and general dickaround-ery.
RELATED SIDENOTE–> I had the extreme pleasure of working for G4 for four years. It was an amazing group of people both in front of and behind the camera. If you asked anyone there I think they would agree that the only drawback was after shows like Attack of the Show, X Play and a couple others, the network simply didn’t have the monetary resources to make all of the shows it wanted to. “How would I have programmed G4?” was the first question I asked when presented with this YouTube opportunity. I sincerely hope you like the results.
We all are working really hard on this channel every day and care deeply about what we’re doing and the audience we’re doing it for. In exchange for your subscription and support, I promise that we will do everything within our power to give you regular, quality programming that is relevant to your nerdly interests. We may fall sometimes, but we will always quickly pick back up and learn from our mistakes. There’s no user manual for this stuff. We’re just going off our guts and hearts (not as gross as it sounds).
It is therefore with mammoth nerd-boner inducing joy that I flip the switch, release the virtual doves and say to you, “The Nerdist Channel is now open for business!!!”
Chris “Subscribe Goddammit” Hardwick
And there it is. Welcome!
