I’m your nerd host, Chris Hardwick
Nerdist is a place where we nerds come together and share the nerdery that we find. It's also my home to various elements of the Nerdist Empire. You might recognize me from TV. You don't realize that's where you know me from, but it is. You think you went to college with me or I look like your cousin's friend, but that is not the case. At one time or another you stumbled upon me on your moving picture box in such cerebral gems as MTV's "Singled Out" and Noam Chomsky's "Shipmates." and so much more...

Great episode. I didn’t know it was possible to laugh so hard at people describing cartoons but this episode made me do just that. It was great to hear how invested everyone is in what they produce. Great show!
I’m a big fan of the show and have listened to every episode and this was definitely my favorite. Please please please please have Bruce Eric Kaplan on at some point. He is amazing and listening to you two have a conversation would make me so happy.
Loved this episode. I draw, I’ve always enjoyed talking about the craft, and to have three guys with great senses of humor discussing it pretty much made my week!
This was a great episode – going to share this one with my cartoonist friends. A great look behind the scenes, and I really like how you crack each other up!
I love broadening to fields outside of standup itself. Great talk! It’s fun to find out the other stuff you as well. What was the “doctor web series” that you mention being one of your favorite things you have done?
Great episode. Bruce Eric Kaplan was mentioned at some point. He would be an amazing guest.
Someone get these men a link to xkcd, their own tumblr and a trustworthy online merchandising company, stat!
High five, Pete! I learned some things- I love comics but I’ve never really thought about single panel cartoons on their own (except for inappropriate Family Circus captioning).
Three episodes of “You Made It Weird” was pretty great, and appropriately weird.
Huge Alex Gregory fan. The NYer lunches WOULD be a lot more fun if you guys could make it more often. Entertaining episode…and insightful.
Love hearing the discussion of favorite New Yorker cartoons! And, luckily, you’re all so descriptive, it was easy to comprehend through an audio medium. My favorite cartoon of Pete’s is a man speaking to a dog with a stick in its mouth, saying: “Don’t you get it? It was never about the stick—I sent you there to find yourself.” And, one of my favorites, is a Paul Noth cartoon of what appears to be a sad clown bending down to talk to a little girl, saying: “It doesn’t mean I’m a sad clown. It means I killed a man in prison.”
I LOVE all the inside baseball in this episode! As someone who antagonizes over the words I choose in a freaking text message, I really enjoyed the talk of minutia in captions and line work.
OMG! This is probably the best YMIW. Your enthusiasm was infectious, the jokes were hilarious and it’s VERY different from the usual episodes. No offense on the last one, the uniqueness of this just makes it brilliant. Great job.
Thanks everyone! The doctor series mentioned can be seen here: http://www.frontpagefilms.com (click on the ‘doctor’ series on the top bar).
Hey I’m really into this podcast. I like how its filmed on the ground in the actual clubs. Great work Pete and all involved. Think about putting that acoustic guitar track in, behind Pete giving his show dates. I think it would make that part of the show a little more exciting as it transitions from stand up into the interview.
Is Bruce Eric Kaplan going to be on a future episode?
Also, good show, I loved hearing about the creation of comics.
Loved it!
Get Roz Chast!!!!
I love the Doctor and Hotel but LOVE Cashier! Phil Collins and conveyer belt are my personal favorites.
GREAT episode–I love the New Yorker cartoons and this podcast is up there with Inkstuds and the other geek-out comic/cartooning interview podcasts out there. It was nice to have a glimpse into the thoughtfulness of these cartoonists.
I can totally relate to the way Pete appreciates drawing. It takes you to another place, like you’re opening a portal into a special world purely of your creation. Hmm, I think I’ll go crank one out (a cartoon, that is).
Pete, you’re a published cartoonist too? Goodness, so much talent!
Although, now that we, your fans, know you’re a cartoonist, we demand a better logo! Really? An awkward looking circle face? You can do better Holmes!
I’d like to recommend a drawing of Marc Maron changing the e-trade baby’s diaper. — Oh great, now I’VE made it weird.
That was seriously funny and enlightening, thanks. As one of the (Ahem) older guys, I enjoyed hearing that younger guys feel the same as I do about certain aspects of our work in this odd little corner of artistic endeavor. Plus, while I was listening I heard the word “skeleton” and I got a great idea for a cartoon. After it gets rejected, maybe I’ll tweet it or something. Ha(h).
Just listened to the episode for the first time today. LOVED IT.
The Trudy cartoon is on my refrigerator — it has moved with me from Michigan to London to Chicago to Mississippi. It is faded & tattered but it is a favorite, and now I know the original caption! Delightful. Makes me feel like such an insider. Crazy the difference one word can make in a cartoon narrative, in any narrative.
Thanks for an amazing episode.
