The Music Geek Track Of The Week: “Stay Away”
By Matt Grosinger on January 13, 2012
Recently I have been really digging hanging out with myself. I am aware how impossibly douchey and self-absorbed that might sound, but for an amalgam of reasons I just am not into the whole “interaction” thing right now. But come on, you know what I’m talking about –- riding solo is so easy. I know what I like (Netflix, Peppermint Bark); I know what I don’t like (people, obligations).
This week, “Stay Away” by Charli XCX has underscored my agoraphobic inclinations in a laughably precise way. Will Charli, a 19-year-old chanteuse from London, has such a magnetically dyspeptic voice that it isn’t a stretch to imagine yourself enjoying her telling you to fuck off. I posted this pared down recording of the original version of the song because I thought it was thematically resonant. She has such a command over her voice that the distortion and electronics of the original recording almost betray her raw talent.
I have a feeling Charli XCX is going to get a lot attention in 2012, but if “Stay Away” is any indication, I think she is going to totally hate all of it.
