This Week at NerdMelt!
by Emily Gordon on June 24, 2011
We have so much entertaining goodness for you for the time span of June 24th to June 30th that we don’t even have time to call ourselves by our proper name- Nerdist Theater at Meltdown. So let’s see what’s happening at NerdMelt!
ZAP! POW! BANG! Oh my! Captured Aural Phantasy Theater brings its Spectacular Superhero Variety Hour down to Earth! Celebrate the antics of the defenders of truth and justice as the Captured Aural Phantasy players interpret nuggets of pop culture straight from the height of the Silver Age. Revel to live, dramatic readings of vintage comic book stories, including one that sees a famous superheroine start college! Evenings also include short acts, sultry singing, prizes, live music, and special surprises pulled from mid-century comic culture. It’s an evening of entertainment with a capital E!
A steal at $10, get your tickets here!
When it comes to movies, there is bad-bad and good-fun-over-the-top bad. Join Eli Olsberg and guests Pete Holmes, Ahmed Bharoocha, and Rory Scovel as they celebrate the latter. Each comic brings in a movie of their choice and after watching a clip/trailer from all three, the audience votes as to which one they watch and rip to shreds. Since the show is on the cusp of our Nation’s Birthday, the theme will be Patriotic Action Films! So will it be something with Chuck Norris? Navy SEALs? Red Dawn? Something else you’ve never head of? You decide!
Just $10 for a movie plus more, and you can get your tickets here!
Channeling their inner nerd and celebrating quirkiness over conformity, Meltdown Comics will host the national book release of Disney Book Group’s new title NERD GIRLS by award winning author Alan Lawrence Sitomer.
A fun for everyone event that will include a musical performance by Randy Kaplan, a trivia contest hosted by the Master of Nerdishness, Josh Greenberg, plus eats, sweets, a nerd fashion show highlighting a new line of nerd apparel and a special message from California’s Teacher of the Year, 2007, as to why nerds already rule the world (in case you haven’t noticed), a fun afternoon to celebrate smarts, individuality and smiles is on tap for all.
Matt Mira of the Nerdist Podcast needs a Day Off, so we decided to give him Sundays at Nerdist Theater. Come watch Mira and Paul Cibis host this comedy free-for-all. You’ll see brand new comics, comics you know and love trying out new material (Chris Hardwick and Kumail Nanjiani have both dropped in), and the magic that is live comedy.
Early Tuesday morning, DJ Nu Mark (of Jurassic 5 fame) is going to be doing a fun DJ set for a segment on KTLA’s morning news, and you get to be there! For everyone who comes that early, you’ll get coffee, pastries, and 20% off all Meltdown Comics purchases that morning- plus you’ll get to be on the news and see DJ Nu Mark in person!
Our popular weekly standup showcase hosted by Jonah Ray and Kumail Nanjiani happens every Wednesday! This week, the boys welcome James Adomian, Brady Novak, Tommy Johnagin, Jordan Morris, Will Weldon and young upstart comedian Chris Hardwick!

Finally, we close out the week with two huge shows on Thursday, June 30th.
Ever wanted to know what your favorite creative types go geek-tastic over but were too afraid to ask? Join Mo Fathelbab (BuzzFocus.com) as he asks hard-hitting questions like “How do you play ‘Magic: The Gathering’?” and “Who’d win in a fight: Malcolm Reynolds or William Adama?” With special guests Misti Dawn (AKA. the nerdiest girl in porn), April O’Neil (Star Trek: The Next Generation – A XXX Parody), DC Pierson (Mystery Team), and Rich Sommer (Mad Men).
$10 for all that, and you can get your tickets here!
Joining Chris, Jonah, and Matt onstage this time are Ben Garant and Tom Lennon! You know them from The State and Reno 911, but soon, you’ll know them from their upcoming book, released on July 5th, called Writing Movies for Fun and Profit. Join the guys as they discuss the business that is show!
$10 and tickets are going fast!
That’s all for this week! We’re going to take a slight break next week for Independence Day, but then we’re back and serving up hot nerdy comedy all July long, so stay tuned, and follow us at @NerdMelt!
