Commenter Stormarela reminded me that June 11 is World Wide Knit in Public Day! Knitters and crocheters get together and practice their craft in public. Personally, I love any opportunity to flaunt my nerdiness with other people.

There are gatherings scheduled around the world – check out the link to see if there is one in your area. If you don’t see a gathering in your area, run a Google search for “World Wide Knit in Public (your city).” Not all of the gatherings officially register with the website.

In addition to World Wide Knit in Public Day, there’s also Stitch N’ Pitch, a series of needle arts get togethers at both major and minor league baseball games. At a Mets game last year, they set the world record for most people crocheting simultaneously. Hit up the link to see if your favorite teams are listed.

If you want to learn how to knit or crochet, you’re likely to find someone willing to teach you at these events. Also good: books and the internet. I like Stitch ‘n Bitch for knitting and Stitch ‘n Bitch Crochet: The Happy Hooker. For video tutorials, a search of “learn to knit” will turn up dozens of videos on YouTube.

For some nerdy inspiration, check out a couple of these knitting and crochet projects:
