I’m your nerd host, Chris Hardwick
Nerdist is a place where we nerds come together and share the nerdery that we find. It's also my home to various elements of the Nerdist Empire. You might recognize me from TV. You don't realize that's where you know me from, but it is. You think you went to college with me or I look like your cousin's friend, but that is not the case. At one time or another you stumbled upon me on your moving picture box in such cerebral gems as MTV's "Singled Out" and Noam Chomsky's "Shipmates." and so much more...

yayyyyyy!
Patton! Finally! Haven’t listened yet but I’m sure it’s worth it.
The planets have alligned. Nerd Nirvana at last!
quick heads up link hits you back to nerdist not pattons book
I was promised a song at the end….
A++ otherwise.
What an odd pairing. Like John Waters on Limbaugh.
Love Mr. Oswalt. Awesome episode. I hope Jonah got a lot done with his time off, haha.
Still listening but I have to comment about the “The Wiz white” joke. I was involved in musical theatre in high school and we did The Wiz my sophomore year – at a high school that was 99% white. Don’t worry, it was as painful as it sounds. Pretty much everything except the songs was whitewashed.
Sneaky work on breaking the mics, big C.. inching Matt and Jonah out more and more.
Just kidding, it was a great episode, Thanks!
Pittsburgh is so rednecky, it’s embarrassing. It sucks hearing about how shitty crowds here are.
Jamie….ooooo….you just beat me to the “hmmm…odd that only Matt and Jonah’s mics were broken” joke!
Outstanding episode! Im resending a bunch of CSI Miami based nerdist cartoons i did a while back to stuff@nerdist for post consideration!
BTW: callback to the Ed Helms show. You know how you guys had a long conversation about how to use Ipads for show setlists…well guess what…i saw The Cars in chicago last week and Ric Ocasek was using an Ipad on a modified mic stand for setlist/lyrics!!
Can someone explain the ‘della reese’? Google doesn’t know.
Hey, someone’s dissing our boy Matt. Not cool!! Let’s stick up for our own!!!!

Ah shitsticks. I forgot to put “She Named the Pony Jesus” at the end of the show. Sorry kiddos!
I really liked the segement where you discussed movies that started out as something else. The original Die Hard movie started out as a sequal to a 1968 Frank Sinatra movie called The Detective but it was decided that Frank was to old to play the part so the name was changed from Joe Leland to John McClain.
Great show.
Wow, such a great ep from one of my absolute favorite comedians. Please convince him to come on for another hour at least
SET ‘EM UP, COUNTRY MUSIC! This is one of my favorite people on the planet of Earth!
Question: Do you think that the UCB and Meltdown will be the same as it is now in, let’s say, four years? ‘Cause I Fuckin’ hope so.
Chris: no worries about the missing “She named the pony Jesus” tune….all will be forgiven when you, Phirman and Oswalt connect to record his drunken troll shanties!
sure to include such smash hits as:
“Rockin and Rollin yerself skinny with a 20 sided die-t”
“D@mn that DM gotta hot momma”
“All You Mead is Love”
“She said i was 2 Expience points short of having a Magic Missle”
“Ive gotta half elf named Sir Licorice Candy, his class? Chaotic good .n. plenty”
Peace .n. Monsters Manuals for All!

@Charlie and the rest please don’t lump all of Pittsburgh together the town does kinda suck but not everyone here is a right wing redneck.
I agree with Chad H…not everyone from Pittsburg is a right wing redneck. Take me for example. Im from philladelphia and i happen to be an extreme tea party member who enjoys nascar, gun racks, gettin er done, and civil war revivals where the south wins.
kidding! irony!
3tof.
Ah, I remember Slapstix. Indeed, you walked through a darkened, abandoned, multi-story mall to the top floor to find the venue. Figuring you were going to get pulled into the shadows and mugged at any second.
That whole thing has been renovated and now is the Comedy Factory @ Power Plant Live!
Chris, use the Time Bandits map that Adam gave you, locate the space/time hole that’ll find the production office where this reboot is being cooked up, travel there and vehemently explain why what they’re doing is wrong on so many levels before the idea even gets shopped around.
Stop the Remakes!
I’m just glad nobody’s trying to remake The Neverending Story and Dark Crystal.
Great ep Big C!
Hey Big C, can you re-upload the “Christmas Shows Patton Oswald” clip. I didn’t download it back when it was originally uploaded and now I can’t get it.
Re Blaine Capatch: I saw him at a young comedians showcase when I was in college, around ’90-’91 (we were BOTH young then. Sigh….), though at that time he was calling himself Blaine Damage. He was probably the funniest of the bunch–really the only one I remember. He did a bit going through the whole alphabet, with funny/clever definitions/explanations for the letters. The one I that really cracked me up: Nazis on a rollercoaster (“Veeeeeeeeee!”).
Hi cjm,
Thanks for FINALLY having Patton on. Just get Paul F. And Bam Bam on the same episode, and I can totally go on that killing spree I’ve been planning. I was thinking the guys who canelled Firefly then the guys that greenlit Arthur(reboot).
So I know you’ll never read this, so I’ll just spill it out. Blah blah blah, do a DC area show, Blah blah blah, do more live stuff. Blah, blah, blah kill a man on air…… wait, hold on. Seriously, don’t read that. I was kidding. Really. Those fox exectives are great people with vision. Great vision.
Ta
Yay Patton. I bought his book a while back and loved it. It was really cute and funny hell it’d make a terrific tv show. He’s just so cute and sweet.
Anyone know where I can find that Bill Odenkirk sketch that was referenced?
Yes, Patton is cute and sweet…in fact I just want to dress him in a big diaper and lock him in my basement.
Just listened to this and I’ve never been more ashamed to be from Baltimore, not even knowing we’ve been consistently been in the top (bottom?) 5 cities for homicides/violent crimes AND STDS. I feel personally responsible even though I was at best a pre-teen when that happened. No wonder its been a comedy wasteland here for so long. Hopefully the recent re-opening of The Comedy Store here will help change things (wink, wink, nudge, nudge). Ya know, Doug Benson is recording Doug Loves Movies there in August …
P.S. Thanks for about the quality of the new Man Man album a few weeks ago, it was a large factor in my deciding to buy it over … getting it by some other means.
Awesome episode. Love Patton.
As a Pittsburgher, I’d like to personally apologize to Patton for the room from that story being filled with the worst of The Burgh. I would have been laughing my ass off, and I know lots of other people (including some conservatives) who would have been laughing as well. Seriously, that is great line regardless of your political affiliations, and Patton is at the top of the craft.
Keep ‘em coming guys!
Chaotic Good EP fellas. Was awesome to finally hear Oswalt on the show. Good stories, great insights, entertaining flashbacks, and more. Call now and we’ll DOUBLE your order! You guys always bring a good show. Thanks for bringing nerd pleasure to my ears.
Chris, a laser pussy is technically a lunt.
Nice post i liked the post and commenting by the people on it.
Heartfelt agreement with Three toes of Fury.
“all will be forgiven when you, Phirman and Oswalt connect to record his drunken troll shanties! ”
I will pay real cash money for an iTunes download of Patton’s drunken troll shanties accompanied by lute, flute, and whatever the hell else you wanna add. Then I will tell all my friends to buy them, too.
Nice interview. Glad I listen & now I am also a fan of Justified! Can’t wait to meet you in Seattle.
This podcast wouldn’t come up on my itunes, so I came here to listen. I love this site; I’m going to come here more often. I also just bought Oswalt’s newest comedy album. I can’t wait to listen to it. Rock on Nerdist!
For what it is worth I have it on very good authority that Sharktopus II was just got a greenlight…seriously.
fake nerd meets real nerd
Patton Oswalt never fails to bring it. I have never listened to him without shooting snot out of my nose. If fate sends him into my comic store, I will gush on him like a Peter North video. Swear to God, it’ll be a spooge fountain of epic proportions. Metaphorically speaking. Probably.
Hey guys, finally got around to listening to this episode today, and of course it was great. The reboot/mashup/remake talk reminded me a lot of a short I just wrote and filmed, “How to Succeed in Showbiz in Spite of Really Trying.” Two guys brainstorm a movie called “Punisher Fall Down Go Boom,” and are then asked to make a Mortal Kombat mashup. Yes, it’s 8 minutes, which is like Terrence Malick-length for YouTube, and yes, I’m self-promoting, but only because I think you’d enjoy it. And because I want lots of people to see it. And because I want to be rich and famous. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TGxn_SvdfyQ
Love him!
Would love for you to have Timothy Olyphant on!
Matt sounds like Chris’ subconscious voice — really funny. It’ve been hilarious if Matt every now and then piped in with things like, “Why doesn’t Patton like me?”
I enjoyed that burrito! I enjoyed it very much! Patton Oswalt never fails to crack me up. Best Albert Brooks story ever! Please have him back again soon! Thank you!
I wonder how long ago the show was in Pittsburgh… because it’s hardly a struggling, decrepit steel town these days. This was a great interview, though. I love Patton. I wish you had touched a little bit on his more serious acting, too. As in, how different is the approach for doing Young Adult or United States of Tara, etc.
