  1. I loved this podcast!! I have been listening since you guys started!! I was actually listening to this episode to go to sleep…but it was so good it kept me up! you guys rock no joke!

  3. I have a double quemment! First, be patient with Torchwood. It gets better towards the end of the first season and by the time you get to third season (which is really more of a miniseries) it is amazing. Dark and twisty and emotionally gut-wrenching.

    Second, could you have more writers on the podcast? I really enjoyed the episode with Brad Meltzer, especially the bits where he and Chris talked about their writing processes for novels, Chris’s book, and stand-up and how those differ. I teach Freshman Composition at a university so I’m always interested in hearing how professional writers still have to struggle and then find ways to make it work. I think writers from a variety of fields would be interesting–one that comes to mind is Jane Espenson, writer for Buffy, Battlestar, Caprica, and now the new season of Torchwood. She’s also a Twitter enthusiast and hosts writing sprints occasionally via Twitter. Thanks for a great week of podcasts!

  4. Hello from Minneapolis! Love the podcast, blah blah blah I’m a big fan yeah we get it. I was going to say I’m excited for the new season of Web Soup but unfortunately I have DirecTV so I will be uncontrollably weeping on Wednesday (more than usual!). Is there anyway to view the show online, or will I be left to sit in the irony of not being able to see Things You Can’t Unsee? Last season one of my Twittershots! made it on the air, so I’d like to say thank you because I’m such a big fan of the show and have been listening to the podcast since episode 1 (queue slide whistle).

  5. I second Allison’s comment on Torchwood. I was not impressed in the beginning, but the mini-series was incredible in a rips your guts out sort of way.

  7. I love the podcast. It’s actually been helpful to me in a real way, because listening to the podcast gives me impetus to exercise.

    You’ve said before that “Noodle Stories” tends to divide the audience; have you considered doing a solid episode of nothing but Noodle Stories that those who enjoy them can exult in and those who don’t can just skip over?

  10. I’ve enjoyed my Tweaked earbuds for a couple of weeks, but this weekend they got caught on something and the inner part of one pulled out from the outer part. I was able to stick them back together, but if they had asymmetrical cables they’d get caught a lot less. Good sound, but the construction could be better.

  12. So, I’m confused, but Jonah said that zombies don’t float but on “We’re Alive” zombies swim out from a small island and try to attack the characters who are on a boat. Granted, in “We’re Alive” there are smart zombies but I’m not sure Jonah has the proper authority to make a wild generalization like “zombies can’t float”. Just sayin’.

Matt talks about baseball statistics (which are actually really cool, the Billy Beane story is a story of a guy cracking the numbers of HUMAN PERFORMANCE and forming a way to gage success through nerdy pursuits instead of “gut feeling” like how people signed players before that) and you diss him! Before him, baseball was for dummies! Now the statistics are so well-developed that they can simulate players going backwards and forwards in time! Like science! Like Doctor Who! And you are making fun of him! For being excited about science and numbers and smart people winning at things! On the Nerdist! I haven’t slept for like 24 hours so I am probably missing/pointing out the subtle humour! ALGEBRA!

  14. I had a similar reaction to Tennant’s farewell to The Doctor, especially having seens his apprearance on Graham Norton first, knowing how emotional it was for the actor, not just the character.
    As for “Torchwood”–stay with it. Trust me.
    Oh, FYI, Engelbert Humperdinck is Mr Dorsey’s stage name, but not a made-up name: it’s the singer’s favorite opera composer.

  15. A quemment (I pray to the Nerd Gods I’ve spelled that correctly) for Matt Mira:

    Listen Mira, I have been getting pretty tired of these “Mira standup” updates with no progress to speak of. I myself started standup this winter and have been grinding away doing shows wherever I can – in awful sports bars, basement rooms and even a freaking laundromat!

    I know you have a job, but so do we ALL. I work for high-powered securities lawyers and still manage to drag my ass out to open mics whenever the opportunity presents. I hate to go all “starving kids in Africa” on you, but any number of baby comics like myself would KILL for the opportunities and resources you have at your disposal. You are pals with Chris and Jonah – two wicked comics who are mentoring you through the toughest time of your career!

    Because I am about one step away from coming out there and making myself a Matt Mira suit, Silence of the Lambs style, I would like to take this opportunity to issue a challenge to you, Matt Mira:

    Starting from whatever date you choose, I challenge you to perform more standup sets than me in the next calendar year. If you lose, I get to come out to LA (at my own expense) and do a set at one of the Meltdown shows. If I lose, you can come headline at my new room I’m about to start running here in Toronto.

    What will it be Mira? Are you man enough to have a lady comic as your nemesis?

    PS to Chris – I met you briefly at the first MaxFunCon and I can’t express how delighted I was with your performances and overall energy that weekend.

    PPS to Jonah – I don’t have a specific message other than you’re funny and a real babe.

  16. So, how weird is this? There’s a show called That Mitchell and Webb look (it’s on the Netflix) in which they do sketch where they two show leads alternate playing Sherlock and Watson in a play. It kinda freaked me out that you mentioned a guy playing Sherlock Holmes swapping roles in a play (even if it was a different play).

  18. Loving the Hostful episodes! A couple of comments:
    1) Definitely stick with Torchwood. It sucks that the first two seasons don’t flow well, but once you get to season 3 (miniseries) you’ll appreciate the backstory from the previous two seasons.
    2) I’m a Doctor Who nerd, a Star Trek nerd, a Firefly nerd, a math nerd, and a baseball nerd. So much so that I taught my husband to manually score a game on one of our early dates. Just gotta say that listening to Matt Mira wax statistic was a little slice of hot! Thanks for indulging Matt for a few minutes on his sports nerdiness :)

  22. Huge nerdist fan leaving a quick quemment about jonah’s ambivalent strokes mention near the end of the “bionic arm” hostful podcast.
    I too found the newest strokes album “angles” a little challenging at first but gave it a few more listens and now I really love it.
    I hope Jonah will give it a few more listens and cone to enjoy it as much as I do…almost as much as I love nerdist.

    You guys were talking about David Tennant being reincarnated into Matt Smith and so I wanted to leave a quemment, but all i could find were the comments. I hope its ok to leave one here.

    I started watching Dr Who with Christopher Eccleston, and when he left I was thinkin who is this David Tennant guy? he isnt the doctor… I cant stand this guy. Thankfully my friend got me back into it and I watched up to the first few episodes of the Matt Smith incarnation, and the same thing happened where I think the last incarnations were the actual doctor and this new guy is terrible. hopefully someday i can come to terms with the loss of the tenth doctor and start watching again.

    the question part of the quemment: have you ever had a hard time watching Dr Who after a doctor was reincarnated?

    BONUS COMMENT: I want you all to know that the podcast is great and the quemment song is awesome.

  25. Just a nerd nitpick, Romero zombies aren’t the same as Max Brooks zombies. Romero zombies were orignially animated by radiation coming from space due to a comet passing by Earth. Max Brooks zombies are virus/infection based. In Night of the Living Dead the dead were no longer rising from the grave after the comet passed Earth. Max Brooks zombies continued to spread like a pandemic.

    The brain elimination is true for both though. Just not for the Trioxin-based zombies from the Return of the Living Dead series.

  27. Long-time listener, first time poster. Love, love, love the podcast. Not to get all nerd-crushy or anything, but I’ve enjoyed watching Chris since “Singled Out” way back in the day, and I’m glad to see Nerdist be the success it is. Way to go, guys!

    Matt, don’t let those guys give you shit about planning your watches. That’s what us watch nerds do! (I also am lusting after a Planet Ocean and that’s my next Ridiculous Present to Myself.)

    I have a few quemments for you:

    1. Because of my interest in turn of the century science fiction/fantasy (Jules Verne, H.G. Wells, etc), I have been fascinated with concept of modern like technology having been produced in the Victorian era. Up until last year, however, I was completely unaware of the Steampunk movement. Once I discovered it, I did some research and discovered two things: some Steampunk enthusiasts tend to crossover into the fetish world (not my bag) and a lot of people believe it’s fairly lame and has run its’ course. So my questions to you are theses: Am I a douche for liking it, and have any of you ever been “johnny come lately’s” to a particular trend?

    2. As a time travel geek, I’ve always had an interest in “Dr. Who,” but as a kid it just freaked the hell out of me, so I never watched it. Can I get into the recent incarnations of it knowing nothing of the forty years of history behind it?

    3. Have you noticed whenever anyone uses a computer on TV or in a movie they never use the mouse? They just type frantically. Are all Hollywood computers using DOS?

    1) Do you purposely keep Janet off the podcast because you secretly know that she is the funniest person on the show?
    2) When, oh when, are you going to post a Dungeons & Dragons actual play recording? Many are crap, but some are hilariously entertaining. Check out the PVP/Wil Wheaton series, or the excellent Critical Hit, from the Major Spoilers web site. My dream lineup would include: Chris, Wil Wheaton, Vin Diesel and Patrick Warburton, with Stephen Colbert as Dungeon Master. These guys are all confirmed D&D players. Chris, just make it happen.

I have been listening to both podcasts of the week on bus rides across New Jersey lately as I am an academic team nerd (the ultimate form of high school nerd.) This podcast keeps me laughing too audibly every weekend and I just wanted to tell you guys that it is one of the greatest things I know of. Keep telling noodle stories, let Matt talk about awesome sabermetrics, and best of luck with all of your future endeavors!

  34. I’m catching up on some old shows, so a little late to this party. It doesn’t appear that anyone has commented yet that there USED to be Dunkin’ Donuts in LA! In the 70′s when I was kid I lived in Torrance and there was a Dunkin’ Donuts on Crenshaw Blvd. just south of Sepulveda Blvd. What I remember most about the place was that they had a platform & window so kids like me could watch the donuts being made and gaze in wonder at how those clumps of dough became sweet goodness. I think it changed hands or went away in the 80′s though (I been gone from the area for a while so not sure).

  36. Perhaps my favorite part of this was the combination Borders books and Taco Bell riff with Jonahs comment and Chris’ crazy giggling. All while poor Matty is trying to talk about Baseball. Brilliant. So fucking funny :)
