Chris is right everyone. This podcast is great place to go to feel like you fit it in. Because of it I realized there are more people out there like me then I thought. Thanks Chris for providing us with this podcast. It’s truly very helpful.
Matt – I feel your pain. I dealt with a bulging disc a couple years ago and IT SUCKED. Don’t freak out if you need surgery. Surgery is scary, but let me tell you – it’s SO worth it. I instantly felt better. You’ll be sore for a little while, but it’s 1000 times better than the crippling fuck-me-I-can’t-walk pain you’re probably dealing with now.

First, let me just point out how awesome it is that Chris responded. One of the reasons I love this community, is that those who run it don’t just sit atop some throne and do their own thing. They are in the community taking an active role. Not only did Chris post, he posted in disagreement, which I don’t believe many community managers would take the time to do.
As for telling him how to run it, hey, I have an opinion. I’m not saying “ZOMG I AM TEH UNSUBS”I just was representing an opinion I, and several other listeners that I know, have and I thought Chris should know about. He is right, its his show, but that doesn’t mean the door should be closed to constructive criticism. It is painful to hear others “shit” on your work- but it also allows for growth.
Finally, as to the criticism directed at my opinion, my point wasn’t that it was irrelevant to me, but that it was irrelevant to the large majority of the audience. When Chris plugs some listener randomly, it is relevant solely to that listener, and thus bores the rest of us. It does give the nice listener who sent you the email a boost, and that is a great thing. But the podcast, IMO, isn’t the place for that; the community site is. Unless of course, Chris wishes to make the podcast a place for plugs. In which case, I and a couple million other listeners, will send their resumes to read on air.
On a different note, it sounds like I may have upset our glorious Nerd Master (if his diction is any clue), if I have, it was not my intention, and I apologize- all I had was an opinion.
n18pr: saying, “Helen in Olympia Washington likes cats” is plugging one person. If I mention a content creator type who has a site where he/she makes stuff that I enjoy, that’s no different than plugging bands I’m listening to or movies I’ve seen. It’s only borders irrelevancy if the plug isn’t actionable. I’m sure more than one person could appreciate learning about a new artist or site with content they hadn’t known previously, and that is my disagreement with your point.
And I get that your comment wasn’t malicious, but it’s okay for us to still be pals and strongly disagree! I give you loads of credit for your politeness in your opinion sharing. That is not always the case!!

hey there, i just was watching the best/worst thing simoultaneously, Lost and jurassic park three. why do you think they were building that air strip in lost? so that in JP3, they could land and get attacked by the spineosaurus. That’s the only answer. huzzah.
Chris brings up a valid point up. I wish I could go in depth on why, but at the moment I’m really not in the mood to think of words with sweeping emotions and opinion changing power. Just I agree with you Chris, and n18pr I do not. But I do like that even people we disagree with we get along with. The Nerdist community is so fucking awesome. Are there any houses for sale?

A small anecdote about how into this show I am.
After wracking The Neverending Story archives in my brain, I just yelled “Artax!” uncomfortably loudly in a coffeeshop with my headphones on. SO many weird looks.
WORTH IT.
I flippin’ love this podcast. Makes my nearly hour long commute not suck big hairy gorilla unmentionables. Chris, Matt, and Jonah, keep up the fucking awesome work!
I do find myself yelling shit in the car all of the time though. That’s a tad strange. And of things I started thinking about lately is precisely when being a nerd became “acceptable”, rather than shunned. Because being around for the later one sucked the prior mentioned unmentionables. You kids today (not the Nerdist guys, everyone who can be a nerd and have friends in school) have it pretty damn sweet. Access to untold amounts of anything you want to find on a magical box that connects you to people who don’t suck around the world.
Well, I’m gonna stop this train right now, because I’m getting to a “Back in my day” when I’m only 28. But seriously, back in my day we had to type LOAD “*”,8,1 to get our games going. C64 Ghost Busters was one of the greatest games ever!
Ep. 67 was amazing. I loved that you said “prolly” in Ep. 68. I’ve been using that forever with my BFBFF (best facebook friend forever). Love the show. You are a great interviewer. Love Web Soup also. Keep up the great work.

I’m sorta unclear about what makes my comment racist. I’m pretty sure I dispelled the first count of racism, and it seems you’ve drawn a second one from thin air. Unless you mean racist against white people, which is just silly.
It usually helps to tell someone how they’re wrong or make, y’know, any sort of argument. Anything. Gimme a fact.

But I don’t know who you are on twitter! I don’t know who you are at all! That’s the point with telling people they’re wrong on the internet; the moment I see you as a real person is the moment I start respecting your opinion, and we can’t have that!
And, yes, I’m sure people have been killed for being white. I just mean that I bet you’re white and have never had to stop someone mid-sentence and say “Hey. I’m white. What exactly are you trying to say about white people?” I’m taking a wild guess that you’re in America, too. I bet you’ve been to neighborhoods in America where you were like “Oh, crap. I’m the only white dude here and I feel a bit uncomfortable for it.” I’ll take a wild guess that you’ promptly went to somewhere there was white people, which is pretty much anywhere.
And yeah, it’s pretty dickish to say someone’s wrong without even trying to say why. Most people on the internet will at least try to infer something about how small the person they disagree with’s genitalia is.

Matt – Sorry to hear about the bulging disc. I had a really REALLY bad one (bulging 13mm directly in to my sciatic nerve) for about 7 months. I did a lot of physical therapy and acupuncture, and did a couple of steroid injections. All that stuff only provided a tiny bit of relief, and only for a short period. I finally decided on surgery, after doing some serious research and considering.
First, let me give you this advice – when someone tells you to avoid back surgery at all costs (everyone will tell you this), ask them what their experience with it is. The answer will most likely be that they have absolutely none. Surgery’s got this bad rap for whatever reason, and it’s bullshit. The procedures these days are minimally invasive and given the mechanics of what you’re suffering from, have a very high chance of making a huge improvement in your life.
Personally, surgery was a total game-changer. When I woke up from surgery, it was like the “oh my fucking god my leg is on fire” switch had been shut off. I had zero pain, except for some soreness that was very localized around the area where surgery had been. I was up and walking around in less than 24 hours. I had a two-inch incision which did not even require stitches, and since the procedure I had (microdiscectomy – google it) did not require cutting muscle, the discomfort and recovery was minimal. In fact, since being discharged from the hospital (again, the morning after the surgery), I’ve taken less than five pain killers, and I’ve completely gone off the nerve pain medication (neurontin). I’m only two months out, so I still have to be careful about bending, lifting, and twisting, but life is a lot better.
I had my surgery done at UCSF here in San Francisco. If you can swing that, I highly recommend it; they’re one of the best spine centers in the country. My surgeon was awesome and clearly did an amazing job. I really cannot recommend this procedure enough, if you’re not getting relief from other methods. The one stern warning I will give is to not put off trying steroid injections (they are really not a big deal, and depending on how big your bulge is [heh], could totally clear up the issue) and don’t be afraid of surgery. I’ve had dental procedures that were more harrowing.
Feel free to email me if you’d like more details. If you’re like me you want to know every little bit about it. What I found in my searches were a lot of accounts from people just about to have surgery, or the day after, or whose procedures went wrong for some reason. They’re the minority.
Good luck! I know how you’re feeling; I could hear it in your voice on the podcast. I wouldn’t wish that shit on my worst enemy.

I’m sure RDIO is a great site, but I’ve been using http://www.GrooveShark.com a lot lately, to catch up with a lot of albums I missed. It’s not perfect (it’s basically a cloud version of Napster, where you listen instead of download), but it’s free and you can create and share playlists. I’ll probably make the switch when I finally can’t find a song on GrooveShark.
