E3 Floor Report: Indiecade

by Chris Hardwick on July 18, 2008

While there were many neato games at E3, most of them had the corporate feel of committee thinking. Indiecade is a Venice, CA based company that seems more like an indie record label than a video game company. They pool the most innovative games from around the world that are made by individuals who are more concerned with expressing their own unique visions rather than trying to sate the 18-34 year old demographic with predictable premises aimed through recognizable brands.

Darkgame was one of the most interesting, though not featured in the video below (but you see the octopus helmet worn in the game for a split second). Two players at different PCs play against each other, one being the hunter and the other the prey. The prey gets a view of the gameplay but the hunter’s screen is black…he must fire "in the dark" using sensory data picked up through haptic feedback from the helmet; in other words, the helmet vibrates on your head in relation to where the prey is located which gives you a sense of where to fire. It was a total techie Marco Polo kind of gaming experience.
