$400 is the extra cash that you can send to AT&T sleepaway camp if you want the 3G iPhone but don’t wish to have anything to do with AT&T. The no-contract iPhones with sell for $599 and $699 for the 8G and 16G models, respectively. If you are already an AT&T customer and wish to purchase one but aren’t eligible for an equipment upgrade, they invite you to do so for for $399(8G) or $499(16G). Of course, if you’re a new customer, an existing iPhone user or are near the end of your current AT&T contract then celebrate by handing over the $199/$299 subsidized pricing. Plans start at $69.99 a month.

This is cool and even though it’s a bit pricy it’s worth it for people who don’t have AT&T and don’t want to have to hassle with switching if they’ve got the extra $$. Thankfully I am not on a contract and am already on AT&T. Are you getting the new one?
Hmmmm, yah it seems like a whole bunch of greed from AT&T and APPLE with the hidden fees and money-taking workarounds… i.e. you can buy an unlocked phone and not get a termination fee BUT you won’t be able to use the iPhone on any other network except AT&T? After all said and done I might still get one.
I don’t think Apple has anything to do with the contracts, except picking what carriers they work with.
I think Apple was involved with the subsidized pricing, which didn’t exist on the old model. I’m going to get one for sure. I hate the EDGE network A LOT.
